Looks like something is short circuited & due to which there is burning smell coming out of the machine. Disconnect the machine immediately & inspect the insides of the machine. Locate the burnt motor or burnt wires. You heard the noise coming out of the motor. It could be dislocated brushes due to which the motor could not rotate & in turn it burnt your motor.

It sounds like the motor is heating up and tripping the overload. The squealing is probably coming from you pump. Tilt the washer back and turn the pulley for the pump by hand and if it make the squeal, replace. If it does not you may have a bad transmission.

April, You say you are suspicious that the smoke could have originated from the motor, BUT have you confirmed it? Have you tried running a short cycle without a load to see if the spin cycle rattles the machine or whether the machine works? Watch for smoke and turn off the machine immediately if you see or smell burning. If the motor is burnt, I think replacing should not be an option but rather replacing the machine should be considered.

Washer started to smoke during spin cycle then a cracking noise began after that.

You may just have a defective drive belt. The motor itself will smoke under certain failing circumstances. Can you give me a model # ?

Washer makes alot of noise

time to replace the belt , might need a tub bearing too / tentioner pully might have froze . remove the back panel with the washer unpluged look to see if the tentioner is at its fullest possition if so replace the belt .

Loud noise, then not so loud, but now electrical burning smell and little draining

the smell is your clutch and the lack of draining is a clogged washer drain protector. see these at www.repairclinic.com drain protector is part 541811 and clutch is 2670. go there enter model number and scroll down to the red 100 click it and look for these part numbers.

Kenmore front load washer

My Kenmore front-load washer starts to make the huge noise. The noise happens during the wash cycle, but is mild. During the spin cycle, the noise becomes really loud. It looks like the drum is getting loose and hitting other part of the machine.
I checked the drum, and I can sway the drum easily with my hand. So it looks some supporting structure is broken. I don't know if it is easy to open the washer to check what has been broken.

Um..... not quite sure....

Most likely the transmission on the motor has seized and will need to be repaired. Look under the washer, if there is black grease on the floor then its time to replace the motor and/or the transmission. If you have seen smoke then its probably the case.
