There is nothing you can do to effect repairs on this, you will either have to replace it or send it back to Canon for an exchange unit.

SOURCE: View finder displays "busy" and the shutter is half open

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS.

Installation of this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:

  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
  2. The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.
See the firmware instructions and download the firmware upgrade by following these Fixya Tips :

  1. Follow this link to download a pdf version of the firmware installation instruction guide.
  2. Follow this link to download the Windows Version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  3. Follow this link to download the MAC version of the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D firmware version 1.06 update.
  4. Follow this link to download the Canon EOS Rebel XS / Canon EOS 1000D Instruction Manual.

I hope that helps.

LCD Display on camera not working

It looks like the LCD screen is the only damage. This can be fixed at your Canon camera repairer.

My camera shows black on the screen and view finder but when I download the memory card the pictures are there?

This may seem silly, but is it possible that you're accidentally turning the camera on to camera mode rather than review mode with the lens cap on? That would explain a black screen without being able to view images on the card. Just a thought.

Can't take any photo with my Canon S3IS any more. The view finder and the screen is black when I try to take some photo but I am able to see all photo that is already on my memory card in the view finder...

Look into the lense while setting the shutter speed at a half second or so (slow enough for you to see the shutter open and close) and click the shutter release... you should see the shutter open and close. If you don't see this, then you may have a 'sticky shutter' resulting from lubricant seeping into the shutter/aperature mechanism and preventing the shutter from functioning as it should.(Common problem reported with the S2 and S3 cameras... and probably the S1 as well)

I have gotten my S3IS to take pictures by turning on the power, then opening the battery compartment door and reclosing it repeatedly until the shutter opens (from the power surge) and an image appears on the LCD.

After confirming the sticky shutter was indeed the problem, I pursued a more permanent fix.

Canon Power Shot SX10 IS - I've had camera for about 4 months. As of a week ago, I can only use small view finder for taking photos; the 2.5 screen for viewing does not work now. Able to view photos...

You can reset the camera to factory settings. If after that, you still have the same problem, make valid the Canon warranty since it's 4 months old.

Black screen for Shooting Canon S3 IS

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode. I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:

I tried their solutions twice and it WORKS. My S3 is working fine now.

Picture in View Finder perfectly clear, but out of focus

I would check IS(image stablization) setting and continous shooting setting to make sure these features are turned off. You want to experiment with different IS settings and definitely turn the continous shooting mode because the continouse mode may not focus 100% in order to shoot multiple shots. Hope this helps. -James. P.S. In my case it was too difficult to distinguish the quality of focus in the VF or LCD so you may not see the focus issue on them.

Blank lcd screen when camera is on

No solution for your first problem but it's normal that you cannot view your photo on the LCD screen before actually taking it. Due to the way a reflex camera is built, you can't have a live view on your LCD. The Fuji S3 Pro has this type of preview as also most recent camera (Nikon D300, Canon 40D...).
