Tip & How-To about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS Router (e125894)

How to find the MAC address of a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router

If you have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and you need to find its MAC address for some reason, this article will walk you through the process of obtaining the address through the router's web interface. Other methods may be used instead -- such as Windows Vista's Network Map or a third party utility. (The MAC address is also printed on a sticker on the bottom of most routers, but if the router is hidden behind a computer desk or trapped in a tangle of wires, using the web interface will probably be easier.)

First, open a web browser window and type in your router's local IP address (typically, 192.168.1.1) and hit Enter. When prompted, type in your username and password to gain access to the router's interface.

Once you've logged in, the blue and black Linksys page will appear. Click on the Status tab (the last one on the right).

The MAC address is assigned to the network interface port inside the router, not to the actual router as a unit, so since the WRT54GS has two network interface ports (one for your local area network and one for access outside your network) it will therefore have two MAC addresses.

The MAC address for the port that connects to the wide area network or to your Internet service provider can be found under the Router heading beneath the Status tab. It will be listed below Firmware Version and Current Time, and it will appear as six pairs of letters and numbers separated by colons.

The other MAC address, the one for the local port, can be found under the Local Network heading, and it will be the first item listed there. Typically these two addresses will be very similar -- maybe separated by one or two digits.

Well once it is reset, in the configuration section of the router, for setting standard passwords, you can change the password, which is advisable.

Next, for setting up a private wire/wireless network, My way of doing it is by setting the system up to Only allow Certain Mac Address's from the computers that are allowed to access to the internet through yours

To get the MAC Address, Hit Start, Run Program, Command Prompt. Then in Command Prompt, enter this string line: ipconfig /all

From there, it will give you the MAC Address for that computer. It should be a total of 12 Alpha Numeric Digits, Spaced with dashes between every 2. With that, you go into the router and in the Mac Address section for computers allowed to connect to your network, you enter in all the MAC Addresses that are allowed to use your network. Save, then it should refresh the page once that is done. With that, it makes a very hard to break Network that actually doesnt take much time. I was quite surprised 4 years ago to find that this was the easiest way to really set up a near perfect network with no issues

wireless router connectivity WRT54GS

The first thing we need to insure is that you are connecting to this router via cable and not wirelessly, though it is possible to configure the router via a wireless connection it is very much not recommended for various reasons.
If you ARE connecting via wire, please be specific as to what happens after you enter 192.128.1.1 in the HTTP line of your browser.

How to install this Linksys wireless-G WRT54GS with a Mac?

you can configure that router without using the bundle CD. the default ip address for that router is 192.168.1.1. open internet explorer then type the ip address which is 192.168.1.1. then the default username is "admin" (without " ") then password is "admin" also. then you are now on the linksys webpage and you can configure there. it is much easier to use rather than using the bundle CD.
hope this can help you!
good luck
