Reboot the phone by doing the following:

• Turn OFF the handsets
• Turn OFF the base
• Unplug the power source of the base
• Unplug the phone line from the base
• Wait for 15 minutes
• Connect back the power source and the phone line
• Turn ON the base
• Turn ON the handsets

There are different reasons this could happen: 1. The connector from your phone's mainboard and your display LCD is damaged. This means you either have to change the connector or your LCD entirely. 2. There's a display IC that's damaged. You'll need to take it to an expert or the manufacturer's repair center. They should fix it for you.
Before you get it fixed, inquire about the cost involved and see if it's economical enough to warrant it. If it costs more than the phone is worth, get a new one :)

I ordered a new kx-tg560m handset for my kx-tg5632 base unit, but the enclosed instructions for registering it with the base unit were wrong. Fortunately, I found the old quick setup guide in my files.

If you do not have the same base unit and handset, go to the URL:

1. On the handset, press [MENU], then press [0][0]. The handset displays "Refer to manual to prepare base. Then press OK->"
2. On the base unit, press [SELECT] until the desired extension number [H1, H2, H3, or H4] is displayed on the base unit, then press and hold [CALL] until the CHARGE indicator flashes.
3. On the handset, press the [OK] softkey.

When the handset is off and sitting in the charger, the handset's extension is displayed in the upper right corner.

I have the same phone. When you have the number selected on the LCD display press the "mute" button...that is also the clear button. It works for both the phone book and caller ID memory.

Re-registering the handset
If “No link to base. Move closer
to base, try again.” is displayed
even when the handset is near the base
unit, you may need to re-register the
handset to the base unit.
Important:
LMake sure the base unit is not being
used.
LHave the handset and base unit near
each other when re-registering the
handset.
LKX-TG5422 and KX-TG5423 only:
Confirm the extension number of the
handset which has lost its link to the
base by placing the handset on the base
unit or charger.
If you accidentally assign another
handset’s extension number to it, the
other extension will stop functioning.
1 Handset:
Press {MENU}.
2 Scroll to “Initial setting” by
pressing {V} or {^}, then press {>}.
3 Scroll to “Registration” by pressing
{V} or {^}, then press {>}.
4 KX-TG5421 base unit:
Press and hold {HANDSET
LOCATOR} until the CHARGE
indicator flashes.
KX-TG5422 base unit:
Press and hold the handset locator
button that corresponds to the handset
you want to re-register ({HANDSET
LOCATOR1} or {HANDSET
LOCATOR2}) until the CHARGE
indicator flashes.

This may work ... see if the phone is in "headset mode". If it is, turn it off.

I had this problem too. I popped the battery out, waited 1 minute then put it back in. Unfortunately this clears the memory of all recent calls, etc. but it immediately started working again. So far its only happened once...

I unplugged everything for 30 minutes. I guess everything needed to be reset.

It sounds like the phone system base station is burned out.

Press the mute button to turn mute off.

I don't think that is possible on that model of phone. This is a phone with only the basic features and a fixed ringtone.
