why does the heater smell and not get hot enough? The smell is dirt or dust on heating element. If not hot enough it is because the thermostat may be prematurely shutting down.

...long enough to heat Fan maybe running to slow and allowing the elements to get too hot and open circuiting the cut out. This will be a fault with the fan or maybe dust and debris in the intake

...off it will not re light. This sounds like a bad thermostat. Myself I run them wide open and unplug it if it gets to hot.You can replace it or follow my lead and just unplug it when it is hot
