I have a 2006 avalon with code po500. no speedometer, abs light stays on. dealer changed abs unit with no help. wheel sensors are good. changed speed sensor on trans. where to look now

It may be a bad speedometer head/instrument panel if everything else has been checked/replaced
It certainly would be the item I would look into at my shop.

On many Toyota's the signal from the speed sensor goes to the instrument cluster first and then it is changed to a digital signal by the cluster and sent to the ECM. I wonder if they checked the speed signal with a scan tool. This would access the signal at the ECM and should prove this.
This signal would also be sent to the ABS module so it may be the next step.

you could toss lots of new parts and not fix the faults
tow to a workshop or DIY fixes are possible if you can know the

It sounds like you have put a good amount of time and money into this problem with no success. When will enough be enough? Two words come to mind: factory service. Please take this car in for service.

the dash speed readout is allways feed via the transmission speed sensor , it's usually close to the final drive output from transmission , this not working would also effect car if it had a automatic trans in it as it would not know what speed to shift at, a little less obvious in a 5 speed , wheel sensors usually only feedback to ABS brake system as they tell abs what tires are turning

Your "Vehicle Speed Sensor" refers to two systems. In your situation it is your transmission mounted speed sensor. It is externally mounted and easy to replace. The other system is known as your "ABS sensors. They are located behind both front rotors and the rear one is on the drive-axle. But I don't think we need to get into that. VSS is in with the TCM in the transmission. If you have tyre pressure senders then the light is telling you of a malfunction in that area . ABS will not operate unless a wheel stops under brakes and then only that wheel receives attention from the ABS unit. So if you are on a hard surface road and braking normally there will be no ABS action at all. Under heavy brakes when the wheels start to skid you will feel a pulsation in the brake pedal and that is the indication that the ABS is working. You will in affect (when the ABS is working) take a greater distance to stop than normally expected.

Abs light stays on and odometer quit working
Hi!!
When Yellow ABS warning light illuminates during normal operation, the system has detected a problem and has stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Loss of power to module will cause system to be deactivated and Yellow ABS warning light to be illuminated. This fault will not set a DTC.
The Rear Anti-Lock Brake System II (RABS II) Speed Sensor is located on the Rear Differential Case. This sensor sends the speed signal of the rear tires to the RABSII Control Module, which also receives the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor. The RABSII Control Module uses both signals to control the RABS II Proportioning Valve. If the RABSII Control Module does not receive both signals, the ABS Light will come ON.
Finally, the Sensor I think is giving you trouble. The Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor is located on the transmission tail. This sensor sends the speed signal to the PCM which in turn sends it to the Speedometer and to the RABSII Module. If this sensor is disconnected or inoperative, the Speedometer won't work and the ABS light will come ON. Check electrical connector to the sensor, make sure is clean, free of corrosion and properly connected.
Before you replace the sensor, have the computer codes scanned for FREE at AutoZone, Checkers or similar autoparts store.

Speedo suddenly not working and two warning lights appeared on dashboard one being ABS light warning light.
If the ABS (and likely the traction control) light came on at the same time that the speedometer stopped working, you likely have a faulty wheel speed sensor at the right rear wheel. You can test this by swapping the two rear wheel speed sensors (ABS sensors). If the speedometer then works (but the ABS & Traction control lights stay on), replace the sensor that is now at the left rear (was at the right rear). If no change, you may have a fault in the ABS & Traction control - control unit.

yes it would be under warenty go to the dealer and have them look at it if you need help after that contact me for more help. It could get expensive to fix yourself and it takes special tools to work on abs, it could be as simple as a bad wheel sensor and has to be fixed and the light reset, the dealer has a computer to test and fix it and it would be no cost to you, the only thing they would not cover is if the brakes needed replaced but the ABS would be covered, and hurry time is short for Gm.

ABS light on!
Its possible you damaged a rear wheel speed sensor when you did the strut job. If the wire was pulled tight when the strut was removed it could have pulled the copper strands in the wire from the sensor causing a open circuit. This is not uncommon. You need to have the ABS system scanned for codes and see which rear wheel sensor is effected. If you were to just clear the code it will just come back on. With the ABS light on, the ABS system is deactivated and the brake system works normally as a car without ABS.
