I currently own a 1994 GMC 3500 Turbo Diesel that used to belong to my Father. It has been sitting for nearing 6 years now and while my Father was alive, it seemed to always have problems with the engine. My Father had to replace the engine in this truck 3 times and the one that he had put in it before he died was running somewhat fine, granted he only had it running for a few months before he past away and the truck was parked for the last few years. I was wondering if there are any serious potential problems that could have developed over these past few years of the truck sitting. I am thinking of going and biting the bullet and spend the close to $200 for the batteries and see if it will run. Is this a wise decision? I know that the motors in these trucks are "throw away" motors and they are notorious for engine failure, but the truck has been sitting for so long and i need to sell it or else it will just fall to pieces sitting there in my back yard.
First thing to do is replacing/ or adding fluid and recharging the batteries. Flush also petrol and water, as rust and organic deposit may be present and create more troubles, particularly with fuel. Check exhaust system for rust. Check brake fluid. Check oil, an oil change may also be needed. Check also tirescondition, after 6 years they may have rotten.
Well his first mistake was buying a Duramax Isuzu Diesel... But with that said, Diesel has a tendency to grow bacteria in the gas tank. Flush the gas tank and change the fluids in the engine and you should be fine. You may notice that some of the gaskets on the engine may leak now that they have dried up. they will either reseal themselfs in time or with thightening or you will have to replace the gasket. I don't think that will be the case after only a few years though.
