I`ve used dishwashing liquid with sucess, put two tabelspoons in water system and run for 50 kms then drain, and flush with garden hose refill with coolant or water..
There are several methods for flushing the cooling system on ALL engine cooling systems. Time honored is drain the radiator (drain ****). Fill with fresh water and run engine to operating temperature until cooling fans turn on. Drain cooling system again. Refill with 50-50 coolant. Another method is purchasing a "T" vlave (coolant flush/service kit) from Autozone, PepBoys, NAPA, O'Reilys, CarQuest, etc.). This "T" valve is installed in one of the heater hoses & attached to a garden hose. Remove the radiator cap & turn on the water supply to the garden hose. Let water run until flush water is 'clear'. Remove garden hose from T valve & refill radiator with pure coolant until the T valve drainage turns green/orange. Install T valve cap... DONE!
Start with Flushing out your cooling system. Flush it out with Preston Radiator flush, you have your preference of ether the super flush which takes 3-6 hours or the 10 min flush which is good if you don't have the time to flush out your cooling system.
After you have flushed out your cooling system, replace your thermostat and you should be good for another cold winter driving. What happens is that after a few years of the coolant not being serviced, the coolant crystallizes and clogs up the heater core and radiator causing poor circulation. Poor circulation will cause poor heat and or overheating issues to the engine.
Before you go through all that inspect to make sure you have the right amount of coolant in your cooling system.
Your car's radiator and cooling system needs to be clean to be cool. As
time goes on, your car's radiator builds solid deposits that can clog
the cooling system. A quick, inexpensive radiator flush can keep the
system in shape. It's important to change your antifreeze seasonally. Before
you start your radiator flush, make sure you have everything you need.
There's nothing worse than draining your radiator only to realize that
you need to drive to the auto store for something! What you'll
need to perform a radiator flush:
Phillips head
screwdriver or wrench (whichever your radiator drain requires)
Cloth
rag
Radiator Flush solution
Coolant
Funnel
Used coolant receptacle
*Be
sure to let your engine cool completely before you loosen or remove the
radiator cap. Hot coolant can be painful!
on the new double cross flow radiators, trust me take it to a reputable shop, you dont want to starve one side while flushing the system and end up with a cracked head or warped aluminum head if so equipped
Use the heater hose to back flush the cooling system, they make an adapter kit for what you are doing, it's very inexpensive, it goes in the supply line to the heater core, that is the larger of the 2 hoses.
