Check engine light still on after problem fixed

My check engine light came on the other day and was flashing, i got the codes checked an it was a cylinder misfiring. I have replaced all spark plugs and my car has been running much better now. the check engine light is still on however. Is it supposed to go off on its own or am i supposed to get it reset?

It should reset after a number of drive cycles, how ever to reset it is much easier. while they are trying to reset it have them pull codes and see if anything new was lurking. happy holidays

The P0420 is probably caused the misfires. Flashing check engine light is a serious condition that can destroy the catalytic converter if not fixed. Do not keep driving it like this. Get it to a shop to have it fixed.

Check engine light is on

When the check engine light is flashing it means that the computer has detected a misfire in the engine. It is not good to drive a vehicle that has a flashing check engine light; one or more sensor in your vehicle is advise about an code fault. I suggest scanning for know what code is in there and solve it.

In some vehicles, a red check-engine light means the car needs absolute immediate attention while a yellow check-engine light means you need to make an appointment soon. The light is used to indicate PCM (Powertrain Control Module) problems that are associated with your vehicle's emissions system.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

How to reset check engine light?

Go to your local O'Rielly's or Autozone. They will tell you the code and reset it for free. Otherwise take the negative battery cable loose for about 10 min. This will clear the ECM, but you won't know what tripped the light! Best Wishes, TJ

Check Engine light flashing

Pull the code(s) at the moment the Check Engine light is flashing. Purchase an OBDII scanner (Auto Zone, Car Quest, O'Riely's, etc.) Be ready when it happens... do not shut off the engine ... plug the OBDII scanned into the DLC (Data Link Connector) and retrieve the code(s) at the moment it happens. If you still don't retrieve any codes when this happens, you have a malfunctioning ECM (Engine Control Module). Before you replace it (if this actually happens - no codes and Check Engine light is flashing), Disconnect both battery cables and touch them together for 30 seconds. Reconnect them to the battery and drive vehicle to see if it happens again (could be junk/corruption in ECM memory banks). If it happens again, the ECM is malfunctioning. REASONING: Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is ALWAYS a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). If no codes are retrieved, there's only one cause - ECM MALFUNCTION!
