I replaced base gaskets in a 1340 evo. I tore down reassembled motor while turning it over by hand it turned over real hard. Could it be lack of oil in cylinders?

Camshaft timing or ignition firing timing may off. Recheck timing markings. Check ignition spark is present for the rear cylinder. If your connect the cables to the ignition coil wrongly it will have the same effect. If all is OK then do a compression test on the rear cylinder. The head bolts may not have been torqued correctly or the new gasket is leaking.

If you only touched the carrier you need tore shim it. You can't use the same shim pack you took out. You probably don't have enough lash for the gears to move. Also once the shims are correct you need to pack the bearings with equal shims till they are real tight Cus the new bearings will were in after driving. Good luck
I've seen some oil down around the cylinder base, re-torque the bolts until you decide to replace the possibly stretched bolts or base gasket. Be gentle and do it in sequence.
Hi, Disassemble the base from the jar, and check the placement of the gasket. Reassembly, with the jar upside down is gasket, blades, then base. While disassembled, rotate the blades by hand just to make sure that they aren't in a bind. Replace if defective.
no you do not have to take the engine off the frame. all you do is remove the gas tank and seat disconnect all wiring to the engine take the carb off and unbolt the rocker cover of the cyclinder that has the blown head gasket then unblolt the head replace gasket then reasemble in the reverse order
stock bore on a 1340 evo is 3.498" the stroke is 4.250" remove cyclinder head, with piston at TDC (top dead center) turn motor over till piston is at BTC(bottom dead center) and measure that is your stroke
