I am doing timing belt hi mileage Toyota trying to make my mind up if I should change a cam seals they are very dry now no leaks do you think cam may have a ridge on them and cut new seal ? The seals never have been change
Me personally I would leave them , on high milage cars once u desturb them u might not get them to seal again as cam might be worn . Don't fix what's not broken
I disagree. These seals may well leak soon anyway. I would remove the old ones, clean the cam surface with VERY fine emery cloth if possible, or just lube new seals as you mentioned. RTV on outside is OK, but probably unnecessary if you install them carefully with a coat of oil to prevent tearing the rubber outside.
