The car starts up ok but sometimes rough. It idles at very low rpms (hovering just two or three lines above 0.) It chokes when accellerating between 1200 and 1500 rpm. Any ideas

I would suspect the IAC ( Idle Air Control) module first. The computer should have a code stored that would prove/disprove my suspicions, and a scan can be done cheaply. Autozone will scan and retrieve your codes free, if you have one close by.
I replaced the upper & lower manifold runners seals, now it runs perfect, The reason it runs ok when warm is because the manifolds expand and seal the gaps on the surfaces that the worn old seals are not closing. Also change the spark plugs.
I worked on one of these the other day and what fixed the same problem it sounds like is I changed out the distributor cap and rotor. the rotor can be a pain to get off. and also don't cross any plug wires take one off at a time and put it on the new one.
hello first check your idle with the car running foot on brake see were your rpm reading is if your below 500rpm check your label underhood for your curb idle setting second see if theres a adjustment screw you can increase were your gas cable lever rest against your set screw underhood if you feel confident enough remove your iac motor idle air control valve if the bore were the end of the pintle extracts out to close has varnish builup our carbon it will stick creating vacuum leak type senario causing stalling rough idle sometimes even no start conditions good luck
