Toyota 1994 corolla automatic trans. when i put shift in reverse the car sounds as if in nuetral an when i push gas pedal to move the car does not respond. however when i put it in drive it seems to be fine. do you have a solution for this?

Not really it could be a brake band or a solonoid thats inside the box ,could even be the operating solonoid thats under the selector rod inside the gearbox

If it is an automatic, I think your No1 or No2 shift solenoid has failed, preventing it from finding 1st gear. Thus you are moving off in 3rd, causing it to be REALLY reluctant. The bottom pan will have to be removed from the trans to replace these solenoids which commonly come as a pair.
there is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal.there is by the shifter a little tab that can be popped out with a small screwdriver,and using your key,put into the hole and the mechanical device will release the shifter.
it is called a shift lock override
first check transfluid for level,color,smell&metal shavings if its dark in color and smells burnt. look to change the trans. or if metal shavings also look to change trans if color is clear red flush trans then pull trans pan change filter refill with now toyota type trans fluid.
