But, I am still having the problem of the shifter getting stuck in park. I have to KEEP sticking the screwdriver in the slot to RELEASE the shifter from park to drive.

Do have to get this checked out by Toyota?

There is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal.there is by the shifter a little tab that can be popped out with a small screwdriver, and using your key,put into the hole and the mechanical device will release the shifter.
it is called a shift lock override

  • kirtec auto May 26, 2009

pull up the cover plate with a screwdriver and take a look that nothing is in there interfering with the solenoid release mechanism.

it can be fixed, but it is all money.

  • kirtec auto Jun 16, 2009

you do not have to take it to toyota, but they are very familiar with those issues and in the end, costs less

Is this an automatic or manual transmission? When was the last time you changed the filter if it's an automatic? You may have a valve body problem too.

On the 1994 Toyota Corolla, there is an override switch, which is located above the gear shift under a plastic tab. ( You need something like a key or screwdriver to depress it), It will get you out of park and allow you to drive. I'm guessing however that the "brake light service switch" is the problem and needs to be fixed, so having got it moving, I would suggest you drive it to your dealer to get it examined

My toyota corolla 1994 dx is stuck in park but everything eles is working properly

The brake switch on brake pedal is most likely bad. It tells the transmission that the brake is applied allowing it to come out of park.

Corolla kicks/jolts when shifting gears.

I am trying to understand your problem. Check engine mounts. Have a driver in the car, hood open. Start car, foot on brakes, shift from park to reverse and back again. Shift through all gears, look for unusual engine movements around engine mounts area. Left foot on brakes, press gas in drive and reverse;watch for excessive engine movements. Be careful as you perform these steps. You may also want to check drive axles. Keep me updated.

Unable to move auto gear shift from drive to park

there is a safety device that prevents putting the gear shift in park without the brakes pressed(saves park in your transmission so it isnt stripped accidently) it could be broke
