I have a 2001 Ford Escape V6 4WD. The shifter cable needs to be replaced. I called Auto Zone and they have 3 different parts available. Performance Shifter Cable, Stroke Shifter Cable, and Adjustable Single Shifter Cable. Which do I need? Here's a link to my exact problem.

The fastest way, and the way to avoid replacing parts by guessing, is to get a local auto electrician to scan it with a professional grade scan tool computer. Likely to fix it in an hour.
A detent is a notch or notches in a part used to keep a shifter (in this case) at a certain position. Be that an automatic or stick-shift. You can imply that the shift pattern on a stick-shift has detents for each gear as the shift lever locks and slides in and out of each position for that gear to work when the clutch is released. The detents on an automatic can resemble "steps" which engage a different gear or series of gears(drive) when a certain step is locked into position by a pressure bar or pressure lever.
Sometimes the pressure bar or pressure lever is spring loaded and your hand works against that tension to select a gear or function(drive). There may be an adjustment for the spring tension, or the spring is too weak and the shift assembly must be replaced.
With electronic shift solenoids, some of the shift assembly is different than with the old-style mechanical shifter. The action may be fly by wire with electronic shifts.
I do not know what you have, so there may be differences.
It takes a Code Reader to clear the check engine light. If you have one just go to the menu and choose clear codes, and it will clear out all codes and the light should go out. However, if you do have codes stored on you computor, right them down and find out what they are for, they may be the reason the light is on. If you dont have a code reader, go to your local Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts, or other parts store and they can read the code and clear them off you computor. Hope this was of help.
I had the same issue and after looking into different options, we found that the transmission cable or also called linkage was extremely rusted. I was able to see it; due to the protective hose was worn out and torn. I tried buying this part at auto zone well, they don't carry this part and referred me the dealership. Now, I really couldn't afford to purchase it from there, so I bought it at a pick-a-part and it only cost me less then $20.00 with a 30 warranty. I tried loading a picture and a home video, but wasn't able to. Good luck. :-)
Check your shifter cable. I'm dealing with something similar. I actually just need the rubber busher and not the entire cable. My neighbor is a mechanic...thank God...and from what I hear it's an easy DIY. Good luck.
the shifter which hooks to the box under the hood is missing a rubber ring, causing it to slip off. just go to an auto parts store and buy some shifter rings, and press one on
happened to me. There's a cheap plastic retaining clip which holds some kind of electrical cable to the mechanical assembly. THis clip broke on me trying to move the shifter into drive one day. THe shifter was actually able to be placed into park again but the indicator read, "D". I had to remove all the plastic around the steering wheel so that I could view underneath it. Once I located the assembly and discovered the broken plastic retainer I re-connected the cable to it's connector and secured it in place with multiple rubber "o-rings". I'm sorry that I don't remeber the sizes. It's been about a year and 1/2 and the shifter works better than before. Took about one and a half hours to fix after trying different sizes of "o-rings" that I had handy. I'm sure a cotter pin would work as well.
