I would have the voltage output of the altinator checked, It puts out enough to run the car, which unless your running heaters and lights is sufficiant to run the car but not enough to run the car and charge the battery. Does that make sense?

even when everything off it kills the battery but it keeps running even when i disconnect the battery it stays running, but i was i heard there could be a short in the starter but i will have it tested today b.

I had a battery one time that was the issue and it did the excact same thing. I could charge it and the vehichle would start and run but if I shut it off later the batter would be dead and the battery was only 3 month old, once I changed the battery the problem went away, so good luck to you an this.

battery is a week old now,i just found out that the alarm system if it has a short can couse the issue and there are cut wires undernieth the dash so thanks anymore input is helpfull.

  • Anonymous Apr 09, 2011

Well that makes some sense but usually a short in anything will blow a fuse so thats why I was tryinf to stay away from shorts, but it could be possible. The only other thing I can think of is to start disconnecting items till you find the cause. Once again good luck to you.

Hi, Check the alternator it should be producing 13 to 15 dcv. Use a volt meter for this.
Also don't have too many things running like fan ,AC ,radio or ,cigarette lighter.,Lights etc...

My battery keeps dieing on my 1994 accord, what could the problem be?

If you can drive it for a long time then it is not the alternator. The battery has a short charge duration and it is old. There is a parasitic drain on the system that is draining it when it is not running.

Took car for a drive and had it up to 95 mi per hour and the car died. Battery was completely dead. Jumped it and it ran for about a block and died again. Replaced the batter and check alternator and both...

If the battery was completely dead, then you either have an immense power drain (unlikely) or your battery or alternator are faulty.
When you say you replaced the battery. Was that with a brand new one?
Assuming your battery is fine and fully charged, then the vehicle should start.
If the vehicle starts, then check your instrument cluster for a charge warning indicator.(typical red battery sign). If this is on, then your battery is not being charged.
You can also check with a multimeter across your battery terminals when switched off. You are looking for a voltage around 12.6 volts.
With the vehicle running, run the same test across the terminals. A healthy alternator should be charging at anywhere around 14Volts.
When running, if the battery voltage is constantly dropping, then you have a faulty charging circuit.

I try to start it and it just make a click noise and wont start

Possible bad Starter motor. Possible dead battery. Possible bad Alternator resulting in a dead battery.
First try have someone hold the key in Full Start position, hear the click and tap on starter motor with a hammer. If it kicks in and starts up (be ready for that) then the starter is going bad and should be replaced. (Might get 3 -4 more starts like that)
BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT TAP ON WIRES.
If there is no change, then you should be able to jump start it with cables from another battery/car.
Then you need to figure out if the battery is expired or if the Alternator is not charging enough.
You can do this with a multimeter on the battery. With engine running you should read about 14.5 volts or more, up to around 15 volts plus.. If not, if voltage is around 12 volts or lower, when running, then you will need to replace the Alternator.

If you are getting good voltage from the alternator, then you can assume you need to replace the battery. The other alternative is a short circuit draining the battery or you left a light on somwhere and drained it. Run the car for 30 to 40 mins minimum to recharge battery (idle is good). Or just use a battery charger. 10 amps for 3- 4 hours, or 2 amps overnight..
Hope this is helpful.

Battery keeps draining

if your battery died while driving and the car cut off while your driving,, your problem is from your alternator!!!,, on a normal working car, you can start, remove ther battery terminals and the car would still run cause the alternator will be powering the car. In your case the alternator isnt working and the car was working on battery power therefore when the battery went dead the car cut off.. Your alternator need \s to be charging between 13.5 and 14.2 volts.. as little as 10 volts will keep the vehicle running.. I'd suggest you have the alternator replaced.

Car wont run.

Does it crank well and all that but with no spark or is the battery just dead? If the battery is dead, it either won't charge while alternator is spinning or the alternator doesn't charge well enough to keep the battery charged well. If it jumps and runs indefinitely, battery is done. If it jumps and dies, alternator is done. If battery and alternator are fine, and you have no spark, you may need a new coil, new spark plug wires if they are worn out and too resistant, pick up coil inside of distributor, or you may have some other ignition system issue.

Most times when an alternator fails, it starts charging less and less till the car won't keep running or it won't start the next time. If the alternator hasn't failed, the battery needs replacing. If your battery is 5 or more years old this is a very good possibility. If your alternator failed and you have killed your battery many times before replace them both. Each time you drain a battery to dead you lose about 10% of its current capacity.

If the battery is fine and engine will not turn, starter may need replacing. Hope I helped.

2000 Dodge Ram cargo van trouble starting and once started will not keep running tried jumping battery and no change what should we try next?

Sounds like the alternator is bad (not charging). If your battery is good/charged it should run until the battery is drained. If the battery is bad/not charged the car will die as soon as the cables are taken off as there is not enough juice to run the ignition system. If the alternator is good (but battery bad) the car would still run as the alternator makes power to run the car but becasue the battery is dead/drained there is no power to start the car (hense needing the jump). Have the alternator/charging system tested

Is it my battery?

well this is what you should try ,,jump the car get it running
then when its warmed up take the positive lead of the battery
if the car stops the alternator is gone (thats what charges the battery) if the car runs its fine

and if u have put another new battery in it and the alternator is fine look for any broken wires earths or positives that could be making it drain so quick
and make sure your battery levels are full
hope this helps
