What are the labor hours to r/r front pads and rotors on a 1997 Sable?

takes me about an hour or less if there are no extra issues. Not sure what the shops charge--they use software to tell them the labor estimate.

The left rear tire locked up only when going forward

Hello, Most likely you have broken Emergency brake pads trapped inside the inner rear Rotor or drum. There is also a possibility that a rear wheel bearing has collapsed especially if you have heard a whining noise while driving.

Since the Sable is a Front-wheel drive vehicle, the rear wheels have few parts. This will not cost as much to fix. The rear rotor/drum will need to be removed and the defective parts replaced. The rear rotor/drum will probably be bad along with needing pads or bearings.

The other rear wheel should be checked for damage too. I hope my solution is helpful to you.

1997 grand am gt needs front brakes. friend took to shop and just for front rotors it costs over 500. is this even possible. it was initially told to me it would only be 150 for front rotors including...

No way, they are ripping you big time, Shops make money on brake jobs, but that is a little extreme. I would call rip-off alert and report that one. The $150 price is a little more reasonable. Even if you have to go to the junk yard for rotors, Changing the pads is a one hour job, and depending how the rotors are attached, 2 more hours at the most plus, pads, $30, plus rotors, $100 max, It sounds like they might have quoted the wrong price to start and then tried to squirm out of it by telling you it was going to be $500. Get another quote or do it yourself. Hope this helps.

I just got an estimate have all 4 rotars "machined" and brake pads replaced - parts and labor were quoted at $542.40. Does this seem like a fair price.

These parts are brand new from autozone...Front brake rotor=90.00 for 2...rear rotor=60.00 for 2.....brake pads front=30.00/set...brake pads rear = 25.00/set...total = 205.00 parts
so the labor is 337.40....and the parts I looked up are not machined but NEW!!!...maybe you should do the work yourself....337 seems like alot of money....I do brakes for $50.00 labor per axle...especially if you are replacing all the parts...it's not very hard to accomplish...the front rotors easily pop off when you take off the caliper(which has to come off to do the pads) and then the rears are not really too difficult either...My opinion...either do it yourself or get another estimate...maybe there's an out of work backyard maechanic on your street you can give the job to..or if your in the indiana area...call me ...i'd be happy to do the work for ya 2196972613jeffrey

Rotors and pads

Doing disc brakes is the easiest out of the two brake types. You will save a fewhundred bucks also. I can tell you that garages charge to upwards for $90 an hour for labor and charge almost double of what the part is. Plus, there is environmental trash fee and of course tax.

Your brake pads start out at $38 and the time it takes you will be less than two hours. The first brake takes the longest (sometimes 35-60 minutes) and the second brake will take HALF that time.

No special tools are needed except a large C-clamp.

Good luck and post questions as they arise!
