Excessive smoke. i think the oil ports in the head are clogged. how do i check them and clear them out?

  • Anonymous Oct 06, 2010

three other mechanics said that it is probably the oil ports in the head being clogged. They suggest to remove the valve covers and clean them out. Is it possible that the oil ports are clogged?

If the smoke comes at start up then after a while goes away it is your heads -take them off and have them looked at in a machine shop If the smoke comes from a load on the engine then the piston rings are going bad -time for a bottom end rebuilt

Why tucson produce lot of black smoke when driving up or racing

Black smoke is usually excess fuel, whereas blue smoke is excess oil. Bad coolant temp sensor, vacuum leak, bad maf, map, other. Best guess is coolant temp sensor as these often fail, making computer think engine is cold and thus causing way too much fuel delivery.

Abnormal exhaust smoke

definitely an oil consumption problem. How many miles? Could be worn rings and or valve guides. The oil light on when hot indicates low level or possible or weak oil pump. Check compression for possible head gasket or cracked head. I wouldn't drive it untill diagnosed.

I ran my chev. 1990 pickup out of oil and now it smokes so bad. and i think my fuel pump is going out but not sure??

Sounds like you may have ruined the piston rings and this is allowing oil to seep in to the combustion chamber hence your smoke. Or if it overheated when you ran out of oil it is possible that you have a bad head gasket now. Check both your coolant and oil for signs, oil will have a white froth, or darkening of your coolant. Hope that helps you.

Occasional heavy smoke on tickover, but not using oil and oil clean.

HI do you now the color of the smoke
if engine emits white smoke its not burning the fuel
it could be water mixing with fuel = head gasket even tho you
dot have water in the oil
if engine emits black smoke - that's excessive fuel to air ration
check air filter & air inlet to see if clogged

if engine emits blue smoke - excessive oil consumption
cloud be valve seals

Car smokes on start up then clears

You need to change the valve seals as they are letting oil seep through & lay on top of the pistons so it will smoke on start up until all excess oil is burnt off the pistons. Hope this helps!

Volvo 850 smoke coming from exhaust manifold

Not to worry. Run the engine up to operating temp before jumping to conclusions and let the heat burn off any excess oil. A leaf will not do any damage.Do not let the engine overheat while idling and if the oil light comes on switch off immediately.
The smoke from the exhaust is oil deposited by oily assembly hands just burning off. It should dissipate after about 15 minutes at most.(or 5 miles' drive)

How to tell if your turbo is functioning ok?

White smoke inducates the Vatican has elected a new Pope!

No, really... White smoke means that somehow oil has seeped into the intake manifold, which could mean a couple of things. Here are some of them::

1. the throttle body valve has failed. this tube runs in an oil port down the manifold from the head, about 4" long.

2. worn valve stem seals or guides.

3. worn/cracked head gasket leaking water/antifreeze into the combustion chamber (causing steam)

4. turbo failure.. smokes at idle

5. cracked block. fissure inside cast block. change motor.

Black smoke indicates too much fuel being introduced through 1 or more ports. This could be anything from a stuck injector to a bad ECM sensor.. even a clogged air filter (which would ****** the air, causing improper mix)

93 Celica - oil light is on and there is a ping in the head. There is oil in the car but it does not seem to be getting up to the head. Air in the line? Blockage? If so, what do I do about it?

If your oil light is on, DO NOT run your engine. The oil light is lit due to insufficient or NO oil running through the oil pump. Possible cause may be excessive sludge build-up, clogged oil pick-up screen, worn oil pump, clogged oil ports through out the engine. Have the engine inspected and cleaned out, also i recommend replacing the oil pump. hopefully this helps

White smoke billows out of exhaust. I think it is the turbo.

whatch for a clogged crankcase ventilation system. internal crankcase presssure(excessive) will push oil out the turbo shaft seal. also you have a supply line for fresh oil to the turbo and a return line. if the return line gets carboned up and there is nowhere for the oil to go it will push out through the turbo shaft seal.
