1994 volvo 850 smoke coming from exhaust manifold, just finished putting on a new head and started it, smoke started coming from the exhaust manifold and has that overheating smell, all coolant lines are hooked up in the right place and has coolant in it i have oil pressure, idle is a little rough, a tiny leaf fell in one of the cylinders and i didnt want to take the head off again to get it out, is that why? the coolant temp is still cold on the gauge but i can fell heat from exhaust manifold
Not to worry. Run the engine up to operating temp before jumping to conclusions and let the heat burn off any excess oil. A leaf will not do any damage.Do not let the engine overheat while idling and if the oil light comes on switch off immediately.
The smoke from the exhaust is oil deposited by oily assembly hands just burning off. It should dissipate after about 15 minutes at most.(or 5 miles' drive)
Testimonial: "yup kept running it and watching stopped smoking idle eventually smoothed out. only two problems left, bad o2 sensor (knew that before i started), and a high idle, ill worry about the high idle later. :)"
I have a NA 1994 Volvo 850. I have excessive pressure in the crankcase. Light smoke emits from dip stick when running and it is using an excessive amount of oil. I understand that this model does not have a PCV valve that could be clogged and I certainly don't want to think about a blown head gasket. What other direction should I look?
If white smoke than u may have damaged or not properly installed the head gasket and getting coolant into cylinders-blue smoke valves are not properly set or damaged allowing oil into cylinders - it takes some time for the coolant to reach op temp and open stat if reading cold after running awhile than possible when working on system damaged sensor wiring-- heat from exhaust is instant

theres a big oil leak coming from my oil pressure gauge line in the block i should fix that and see what happens
i put the right gasket on and put a new head on (machine shop said it was not damaged) and tightened it down the way it said to on alldata
