Hi, I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 'stuck' liftgate latch. It is stuck closed, so that I cannot close the liftgate. I have sprayed it with WD-40, Silicone spray, no luck. It feels like a spring in the open/close mechanism might be broken. Can I fix this? What parts/tools/etc. do I need?? Thanks!

Hi! Where do I get a spring? What kind/size/etc? And, to get into the area to replace the spring, I need a little guidance-- do I undo the two star screws on the plate near the latch? Is there someplace I can see a picture of how this is all put together? Thanks! Gale

Hi! The spring on the locking mechanism may be broken. You need to replace this spring. If you cannot find a spring for the locking mechanism then you can start putting on a similar one just as long that its powerful enough to hold the trigger on the latch. You may need pliers, spring, 12 or 14 closed / open wrench. Hope this helps and have a good one!

How do you release the rear liftgate latch on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It is unlocked but pulling the handle will not release the latch that holds it closed. It is not frozen or rusted?

Unlock the doors with the power unlock button then you have to push in on the bottom part of the plastic bezel that surrounds the liftgate handle, while at the same time pulling the liftgate handle outwards. It should open then.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. The overhead panel says liftgate open but it isnt. I have tightened and oiled everything I can see on the liftgate. No results. Help

There is a switch, most likely built into the latch, that tells the body control module when the liftgate is open or closed. If that fails what you experience will happen. An open / shorted wire or bad BCM or overhead panel will also cause the "liftgate open" indicator to be on. Try and locate the switch and look for obvious damage.

97 Jeep Gnd Cherokee showing 'rear door ajar when liftgate closed

Inside the latch is 2 strips and a pin. the pin pushes the strips together. these strips bend and corrode the latch might not be turning to fully closed then the pin won't close the contacts. Spray Graphite lube in and work the latch with a screwdriver There is a plastic coating that might have worn thru on the latch finger The sensor is there for your safety Caravan's would eject passengers if latch is not secure. But that said bypass if all else fails.

1993 jeep grand cherokee liftgate wont open

i just fixed the liftgate on my 1998 JGC Laredo this afternoon: door handle, when lifted, does not release latch mechanism

here is a solution that may apply to you...

1. open liftgate flipper window
2. remove door panel screws from inside
3. use coat hanger to pull up on locking mechanism arm (at the bottom) to release latch mechanism
4. with door now open, remove remaining door panel screws to completely remove door panel
5. adjust the positioning of the latch rod in its retaining clip (open clip and reposition rod)
in my case, I had took much slack and repositioned the rod by a few threads (about 1/8th inch) in the clip.
be sure rod is seated fully in the clip and that the clip is securely closed
5. test your fix before re-assembling everything

want a long, detailed version? let me know.

How do you get liftgate open on a 97 Laredo with a broken lock?

You need to remove the panel from the liftgate and unlock and open it manually at the latch. It is not fun, but you can get the panel off with the hatch closed.
