97 Jeep Gnd Cherokee showing 'rear door ajar when liftgate closed

My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee LE is showing "rear door ajar" when the liftgate is closed. The latch is solid but the sensor will register that it is open. I believe that this is due to a loose wire, as the status will go on and off as i drive, usually over rough roads. Will i need to replace the sensor or can i just splice the wire bypassing the sensor completely? The dealership wanted $300+ to replace the entire latch assembly.

Inside the latch is 2 strips and a pin. the pin pushes the strips together. these strips bend and corrode the latch might not be turning to fully closed then the pin won't close the contacts. Spray Graphite lube in and work the latch with a screwdriver There is a plastic coating that might have worn thru on the latch finger The sensor is there for your safety Caravan's would eject passengers if latch is not secure. But that said bypass if all else fails.

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited edition. The Computer is dinging and reporting that the drivers door is ajar, when it is clearly closed. The lights come on as a result of this computer issue...

Locks should be tesed /checked via hand terminal(which dealer have).
sometimes that VIC module creates problems due to badsoldering points on its circuit board. try to resolder them. but sometimes it shows what is reads from sensors around car. like tail light out or door is ajar signals.

there is a possibility that switch checks the condition of door which is actully bad and this makes auto lock system act like door is not closed and wont allow it to be left as locked position. this is looking like a endless loop.

Keep getting alarm for rearf hatch ajar, but door is closed

Hi, if the door is a little loose, try adjusting the latch in a little tighter.

How do you release the rear liftgate latch on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It is unlocked but pulling the handle will not release the latch that holds it closed. It is not frozen or rusted?

Unlock the doors with the power unlock button then you have to push in on the bottom part of the plastic bezel that surrounds the liftgate handle, while at the same time pulling the liftgate handle outwards. It should open then.

How do you get liftgate open on a 97 Laredo with a broken lock?

You need to remove the panel from the liftgate and unlock and open it manually at the latch. It is not fun, but you can get the panel off with the hatch closed.

remove the door switch, clean and reinsert. It switched ground to a black cable, which goes to the PCM.
