2006 Cadillac CTS: Drove home from work, parked car in garage... a few hours later tried to start the car and it wouldn't start... made normal sounds a car makes when it is starting, but it just wouldn't actually start. No clicking... not a bad battery... no error/service lights came on the dash... Eventually there was a sort of 'burning rubber' smell after about a minute of trying to start it, so I gave up. Tried again about two hours later. Same thing. Next morning had the car towed; service dept tried to start & it started right up! Did all kinds of tests but didn't find anything wrong. Weird? Nervous this is going to happen again (when I'm not at home) & leave me stranded.
My first guess would be the fuel pump is going bad. Sometimes jarring it a bit will make it work again and the tow may have done it. If it does this again have someone bang on the bottom of the gas tank while cranking, if that cures it then you'll know for sure.

SOURCE: car won't start
Your fuel pump is sticking and not pumping, this is common if you run the fuel down to less than 1/4 full, the fuel pump needs the gas to cool itself, below a 1/4 tank the pump is not getting cooled and after repeatably running low on fuel it overheats and fails. Running the car near 1/2 tank extends the pump life to many years more than running tank below a 1/4 full..
SOURCE: Intermittently have to use charger to start.
the most common cause of this by far is lights left on by defective switchs, these include the map lights in the visors, the glove box light due to a defective switch, the trunk light and the hood light if equipped, check it at night and look for a faint glow, the other much less common cause is the alternator has a defective diode and allows a small current to pass to ground drawing the battery down..

Diagnosing this will be subject to a process of elimination. It could be the radio, blower motor or any other accessory particularly ones with moving parts; Try switching those off and try to note when this problem occurs and what is on/whatyou are doing. Something is getting hot causing the smell so it will be a situation where the accessory will have to run a while before doing it. It is a possibility that there is an electical curcuit overheating, but less likely. Lets rule out accessories first and give us an update. GL
