Ok I have asked Auto zone , if the check engine comes on they can check it , other wise they cant determine whats causing the problem. the check engine light does not come on !!! Does the 1998 Dodge Avenger have the codes to determind such a problem?

A good place to start with this issue is with some code diagnostics. Since it is intermittant in nature, it may not reveal itself immediately, however, there should be faults stored in the PCM. You are correct however, the problem is electrical or fuel related, and with the electronic fuel injection system it could actually be an electrical problem causing a fuel issue. You can get the codes read as a free service at most national auto parts chains such as Advance or Auto Zone. They will interpret the codes for you as well. They do this service in hopes of selling you a part when the codes reveal what is wrong. You can see if it is a spark related issue, if you will do this easy test when the vehicle will not start. Simply have an assistant turn the key while you pull a plug wire..if you have spark,,,(it will arc and you can hear it if you hold the connection very close to the cap of the plug), then your problem is fuel related rather than spark. I suspect that you'll find the problem to be spark related because you have made no mention of the car missing or not running properly when it does start...in fact, your description was that it runs great. If it were fuel related, I would suspect a sluggish start and possibly not running up to snuff after the start. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!

Whether a sensor or relay, code diagnostics will likely reveal it. Also the test that I described will narrow the problem down to spark or fuel. If it is found to be fuel related, you can check to see if your fuel pump is working during this downtime. Good Luck!

Many times fault codes are stored and will show up even when the light is not on. For verification, you could ask your local dodge dealer if that is the case on your model.

1998 Dodge Avenger 2.5L MFI 6cyl
Several reasons here, starter, loose cable, etc

If its got over 100k, probably your starter is bad; happens on the Chryslers models.

And they are not fun to change there is no room at all they are up under the exhaust manifold and you have to pull the front engine mount assembly usually, to get the starter out.

If the cables are all tight and the battery is full then its probably bad starter. Check it or replace.

Also, review this items:
1. Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator Faulty / Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator.
2. Carburetor Float / Faulty Choke Float.
3. Choke Pulloff / Faulty Choke Pulloff.
4. Choke Thermostat / Stuck or Improperly Functioning Choke Thermostat.
5. Fuel Injector Cold Start Valve / Damaged or Faulty Cold Start Valve.
6. Spark Plugs / Fouled Spark Plugs.
7. Relay - Fuel Pumpat / Faulty Fuel Pump Relay.
8. PCV Valve / Plugged or Damaged PCV Valve.
9. Carburetor / Choke Not Operating

Tell us other news. Good luck.

The main fuse block on these vehicles is located at the left side of
the dashboard, behind an access panel. These is also a Power
Distribution Center (PDC) which can be found under the hood.

Fig. 1: Location of the Power Distribution Center (PDC)

Fig. 2: Location and fuse amperage ratings for fuses and relays can be found on the underside of the PDC lid

    Good luck.

Hi,

To be really honest with you, List of reasons could be endless. It would not make any sense without narrow down the issues. You need to take the car to the Auto Zone and get the car scanned for Errors. I am positive you would see some Error's. Once you have those Error's , we could Quickly catch the fix rather than me advising you to Check Relay, Fuse, Battery or Sensors.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

The fist thing I need you to do is a fuel pressure test. You need to puy a gage on it, there is a test port on the fuel rail, and you'll need a gage that reads at lest 75 PSI.It should run on 42-45 PSI. And hold pressure when you cut it off, drop to no less than 20 PSI, when you turn it off and it should take it 20-30 minutes to drop that much.

What you describe is a fuel pump starting to fail, but do the test to make sure.

    Let me know, once done.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Car no start problem is sometimes very difficult to confirm. You try all the possible things, but still you get no fault and problem is still the same.--------
In that case, you need to check few things individually.
Check the spark, the battery, the crank, the fuel and other most possible parts. Click this link below for more details:-- http://howtobyme.blogspot.com/2011/10/car-troubleshooting-tips.html

1998 cutlass....... Theft System light blinking and car suddenly wont start

I have this same problem. It has been happening for about 3 years now. More so when it is cold but it really doesn't matter. The theft system light flashes and you have to wait 10 mins for it to reset and hope that it starts that time. I have sat for 3 1/2 hours before waiting every 10 mins to try again. I have no idea what is wrong with the stupid thing =(

1998 ford f150 cranks good and starts good when cold but when i stop for a short time ,maybe 20 min,it cranks but wont start

a girlfriend had the same problem.. I found air in the fuel rail. After a few times of bleeding it everytime it happened, problem seemed to be solved. I think it may have been a pickup hose leak in the fuel tank

Car not starting - Intermittent

intermitten problems are the worse, when it wont start check fuel pressure with a gauge, and then check for spark, i have spent days on problems such as this, what you have to find is what is missing, fuel ,spark, is maybe coolant leaking into one or more cyls, i have seen air in the fuel system that only cause problems when under hood temp is high, open the hood and it cools enough to to start, hope this helps

My gmas 98 avenger (2.0) wont start. i bought her a batt about 6 mnths ago. it ran fine. but she let it sit for a week, now no start. batt is dead. afteri charge it wont turn or even make a sound, then...

Back to "square one" If battery was drained by a short, etc and sat for a week like that, likely the battery is now doa...Have it tested. Then start checking for source of drain...at this point everything is suspect. Put an ammeter between either battery cable and battery and start pulling fuses till draw is gone. then check system that fuse serves. Yes \, could be a bad alternator but you really should test before wasting time especially if it's not that.
