3.8 l driving it when happened had to start stop 1mile from home made it and will drive fine for 2 min then start again slipping

One or both of the speed sensors on transmission are bad. One is an input sensor, the other is the output sensor. If either one of these shows an open circuit (which they do when they go bad), then the transmission goes into Limp-Home mode and stays in 2nd gear. Those sensors are cheap enough where you should just go ahead and change both of them.
SOURCE: Transmission won't shift from 1st to 2nd gear on it's own
Have someone scan the transmission for bad shift sensors.

have you dropped the pan to see whats the bands are set at, any debris in pan bottom, whats your governor pressure, if bands are ok, but gov pressures are not relative to speed 1 psi per mph up to 95-127psi, port is on pass side of case rear top right, scan tool would be very helpful, your must have mil light on for this problem, gov dtc's, replace gov transducer as gov solniod as a pair, no exceptions, also are there any 02 sensor dtc's, shorted to voltage, this wil make pcm do stupid things to trans shift, affecting gov signals. GOOD LUCK RDJRP
SOURCE: WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE IT WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE
Its the electronic shift control located just under the battery ontop the transmission replace or repair will solve the issue
it'll go into drive but once it reaches 1500 rpm it'll drop into neutral as a safety because at this rpm it is being told to shift gear and when it fails to do so it safely goes into neutral
it will go into reverse just fine and park and you can run all the low drive gears until you reach 1500 rpm then it'll cut it off
i pulled mine out re soldered bad components on the board to fix it but im an electronics engineer it may be easier for you to just replace it
Testimonial: "I will try this as you suggested. Thanks for all your help."

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.

Changing Trans Fluid will only give you new fluid, won't fix a thing. Most likely need to rebuild it. Could try cleaning the valve body & then work on diagnosing the solenoids if problem continues
