When I opened my sunroof it pulled the sun shade inside the roof, then I pulled that out. Now the sunroof will go to the last nitch and will not entirely close. It opens right back up and stays open.

You must remove the entire headliner and unbolt the sunroof, it a pretty big job. If you can find a shop that will do a new headliner and sunroof cloth for $200 it's worth it. If you don't shim the sunroof when rebolting it you'll get air leaks on one side or the other.
you may have to strip out the roof lining to gain access to the sunroof component if you cant pull the sun visor free , dont keep pressing the power button as could at the least blow the fuse , at worst burn out the motor
this is touchy...... FLASH LIGHT .... needle nose pliers..... 2nd person.... to hold flash light.... look inside under the ROOF LINER see is there is anything blocking SUN SCREEN if not them attempt this carefully .... person with pliers pick the center of where the SUN SHADE is reach in carefully with the flashlight shining where the pliers is... the pliers see if you can cover them with DUCK Tape to protect the shade grab shade and start to pull it out... watch both sides in case it gets stuck as your pulling it out from under roof liner... good luck
Hi George, It sounds as if the the sun roof drain pipes are blocked. There should be four and the are fitted into the roof pillars draining downwards at each corner. A flexible rod can sometimes be used to clear blockages, but care should be taken not to damage the rubber hoses. Regards John
"Sorry if I put this in the wrong place but I just got a recall notice for the sunroof drains on my bug.
It's SERVICE ACTION 60A7/S9 and pertains to all NBs from 2001 - 2007
equipped with sunroofs. It's also for certain Jettas, Audi A4s, Golfs,
GTI, and Passats. You'll probably get a notice but I wanted to let
people know just in case, for some reason, they don't get the
notification...maybe because they're not an original owner etc.
VW will clean, modify and inspect the sunroof drains and tubes. There's
also a form to be reimbursed if you've had to pay for any problems in
the past".
Which means that, if you or your car didn't go to this recall, then VW will sort it all out for you for for free. Its a manufacturer's problem.
Just pop in to a dealership and ask, if its been done, you're back to square one but its worth a crack................. Good Luck.
However, here's a website which shows you how to service your sunroof.
Do you have any water stains around the sunroof? If not I doubt that is your problem. If the sun roof is not leaking it is most likely the seal on your front window.
It's typically the motors or the special drive tubes that it uses. If you here a clicking noise then the sunroof became to tight and ruined the motor gears. You can actually switch the two motors, one is for the shades and needs less power then the other motor. They are identical, switch them. Nex make sure they are very tight to the 3 mounting bolts, there is a rubber washer bushing that wears out and alloys the motor to flex too much, causing the gear mis-alignment and gear grinding. This works great I do it all the time.
well the easy way to check is open the sun roof look from the top of the car inside the sunroof is there sitting water in the little drain areas around the sunroof if so the drain is not working... if no sitting water pour some water in see if it drains if it does drain it is prolly the seal isself so if the water drains fine then close the sun roof and spray it with a hose if it still leaks in prolly the seal...if its the drain hose you will have to trace it it useally runs down the a piller let me no what you find or have other questions
