02 VW Passat V6 GLX
My alternator won't keep my battery charged. I've had the battery checked (it's good), replaced the alternator twice (because the first replacement was bad,) and I still have the same problem.
By the way, I had the people at AZ check the 2nd alternator just to make sure it wasn't bad out of the box either.
The multimeter reads just over 12v and sometimes dips to 11.8. even when connected directly to the alternator. This has been true for 2 alternators.
I'm at a loss for how to fix it.
If I disconnect the red cable from the battery while the car is running, the car dies.
Any good leads are appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

have you checked all the hoses for leaks as well as radiator? Yes a water pump may be the cause and can be done by a do it yourselfer depending on your skill level.
LET VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP FIX IT.BECAUSE ONCE YOU DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.YOUR PCM WILL LOSE IT MEMORY CAUSING NO START PROBLEMS.IT TAKES A SPECIAL SCANNER TO REPROGRAM CAR.
HI,
Passats can be reset if the radio is pulled out and the fuse on the back is removed. Wait for 2 mins, reinsert the fuse and turn the radio on. If this doesn't work, please take it to the dealer for the unlocking of the code, for which he may charge you some fee.
Either your battery has just given up the ghost,........ Is it the original, and now 10 yrs old ?
Or your Alternator is not charging enough, to replenish what is used.
Have battery tested first, if OK, then the alternator belt tension, and alternator for correct output charging rate.
If all these shows no faults, your starter is then suspect.
