Sure you can if a mechanic can do it so can you if you have the right tools and knowlege. First you need to know which one thers's one at each whell at the fround rear end housingf the rear rear end housing and the one in the side of the transfer case where the speedometer cable would'of connected on an older model and then theors three in the sides of the trans mission, Touque converter speed forward turbine speed output turbine speed. What proble are you trying to fix? the speedometer not working? Abs light on? Cheack engine light on? Cruise control not working? If the cruise control does work the speed senser is good and the check engine light will be on if the speed senser is'nt working. If the speed senser is'nt working the car will only take off in low and not shift to seecond or any higher gear as the computer doesn't know how fast the car is going. If the speedometer is'nt working and it does shift and cruise and the check engine light is'nt on then the speed senser is working but the speedometer is'nt if it is'nt and everything else is woring then as your driving hit the speedometer with your fist and see if it comes back on they can get stuck and i've fixed quite a few and they stayed fixed. On to wheel drive models with the rear wheels jacked off the ground safty I've run the car up to speed and trying wiggleing the wires and connectors till I wiggled the right thing till the speedometer came on ( including smacking the speedometer ) Just don't hit it too hard as it'll bust just like anything else.
Many times The crusie control won't work either. the seedometer is triggered by a senser on the output shft of the transmission. You didn't say which car or ruck you have or which engine either so I can't tell where the senser is. The wire can come off the senser can wear out and fail the senser can start leaking and the oil can foul the electrical connection. The speedometer can fail too but it's less likly. If it did it may display the chage in miles without showing the speed.
if the fuse is ok. then it may be the sensor on top of transmission. if it fails the speedometer, will not work plus a few other guages. the sensor has a bunch of wires going in to it.
on my 94 i didnt have codes either, but the electric motor failed on the abs due to moisture.the speedometer on mine jumps too,but mine with 220,000 miles it was the gauge cluster, couldnt tell if i was driving 5 miles per hour too slow or too fast.the cruise may be the clock spring behind the steering wheel, but most of the time the horn wouldnt work or the air bag light would be on and beeping
the tell tail is on the hub and drum. a sensor at each location. you will see the one that is bad. it will be burnt. the speedometer does not have anything to do with it. it is a separate problem. most cause of speedometer problem is at transmission.
I had an Audi doing exactly the same. What happened was that through time, especially if the vehicle gets older with a higher milage, dust and dirt gets into the speedometer itself and causes all the small gears to get sticky. I opened it and lubricated all the small moving parts inside and all were ok. Try it before buying a new speedometer. (I'm talking about the speedometer clock itself) Hope this info might help.
