, offer it money or bribes. black male? ealborate, is it a manual tranny, and does the clutch work. and what dont work on the gearbox, what gears.? fail. and when , parked, driving, coasting, shifting up or down. just weeeeee hint.?
Start by checking the Clutch. You can shift gears when the motor is off because there is nothing moving but when the engine is on you have to have the clutch to get things to meld right or you will damage your vehicle. if it's not the clutch assembly it's going to be the transmission. The neutral safety switch will keep it from starting if the truck is in gear and the clutch isn't engaging.
not a clutch at this point but a faulty clutch master cylinder or faulty cable
replace the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder or the clutch cable
Indicates that if hydraulic the compensating port in the m/cyl is nor allowing oil to return to engage the clutch or if cable , the cable is shredding and locking in the outer case causing the same result
Did you check the oil level inside the gear box? Most people never service the car, so this part gets neglected. if it ran out of oil, you probaply broke it(a big repair bill). Try putting oil(probably 90w gear oil;check a manual, internet to make sure;if you make a mistake dont worry any oil is better than NO oil). Check the differential fluid level too;same thing will happen if you neglect doing this.
i guessed the rod that shifts the gear snapped. you said you can move the stick shift through all the gears without the use of the clutch. that is supposed to be impossible unless you are just holding the other end of the stick and the other end at the gear is not moving.
First thing just try to push or pull the 4x4 lever if you get it to move and it feels like it went into some gear try to drive the truck. If this works look on the shifter for the 4x4 and put it in 2 wheel drive (H2 is two wheel drive,H4 is 4x4 high, and L4 is 4x4 low range).Make sure you have the clutch depresed when you try to move the 4x4 lever. If you try this stuff with no fix try and look for clutch adjustment on the transmision you may need to adjust it or your clutch is bad.
