Someone tried to steal car and scewed the key ignitiin, key goes in but won't turn ...what can i do?

I am afraid its a security issue probably, after the ignition was replaced, security system may need reprogrammed by the dealer or a good tech. with necessary software.

have you tried putting the key in the door and locking and unlocking it several times?

you can break the lock by pulling down on the steering whell very hard. or if your ignitons swith is bad you have to get a new one

what makes you think someone tried to steal it? the security light issue is a very common problem with GM cars equipped with the Passlock II anti-theft system. just a few days ago my 2003 impala did the same thing in front of a 7-11. took me about 10-15 minuts to get it started. i just kept turning the key on, tried to crank it, and turned the key off numerous times. i had a 1999 malibu that did the same thing and i replaced the ignition cylinder and keys. that cost me about $160 but it solved the problem. changing it out is fairly simple. if thats the route you have to/ need to go i can walk you through it. unfortunately however, GM, although this is a very common occurance, will not issue a recall to fix the problem.

Replace the ignition switch along with the lock and cylinder.

turn it in to your insurance, you are most likely going to need an entire new steering column to fix this.

Try to turn the wheel in either direction slightly while trying to turn the key. If this doesn't work, someone may have tried to steal the car and broken the wheel locking device.

I had this same problem with my 2002 Monte. It is a very cheap fix about $100(If you do not got to the dealer $800) The car thinks that you are trying to steal it so you have to turn the key in the on position until the security light goes off and when the light goes off dont try to start it. Turn the key to the off position and then try to start it. It should take about ten minutes. I know its frustrating cuz I've been there.
