On the idler there is either a bolt or a square hole. if it has the square hole it is for a 3/8 drive breaker bar if it just has the bolt on it find a wrench that fits turn either of them right as if you were tightening them this will release your tension.

How do I replace the radiator on a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1. Empty the radiator
2. disconnect top and lower hoses on the radiator.
3. remove plastic cowling, (should be an upper and lower half with two bolts on each side. There may be an upper plastic cowling as well that will have to be removed.
4. sometimes you can work around the fan, if not remove the fan belt and fan. Make a drawing of how the serpentine belt goes on if it has a serpentine belt. There should be a tension wheel on the belt used for removal and installation of the belt. Be very carefull of your fingers when removing and installing the belt.
5. Remove the four or six bolts that hold the radiator on and lift the radiator out. It may be easier with two people to lift the radiator out.
GOOD LUCK, IT'S NOT A VERY HARD JOB AND ONCE YOU'VE DONE IT ONCE IT GOES PRETTY FAST.

When I start my car ( 99 Monte Carlo) it makes a squeeling noise in park and in drive. Do you know what might be causing this? We also did not get a ket to the doors or trunk is there an easy way to get...

Check your serpentine belt for wear and proper tension. You might want to try and pin point the source of the squealing.Start off by inspecting the belt and tension. As far as the keys a locksmith could come out to you and cut keys for them at a fee.

I dont know how to tension the fan belt on my 2003 monte carlo .I need directions or a diagram

the belt on your car is automatically tensioned bu a self adjusting automatic tensioner....if there is slack in the belt either the belt is shot, or the tensioner is bad...try a new belt first.

How to tighten serpentine belt for 2003 Monte Carlo 3.8L

the belt is self adjusted by a spring loaded automatic belt tensioner, if the belt is noisy or seems loose either the belt size is wrong (if it was replaced recently) or the tensioner is defective or one of the belt idler pulleys is defective.

"HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.
