I would suggest you start by checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. You should have around 55lbs. but need at least 45lbs. for the engine to operate.
Dont go back to that mechanic ever. Chec under hood for any loose wires, bolts or hoses. Probly somethin simple from carelessness. Find a nice shop at surecritic.com
If you have good spark at the plugs then it is vacuum or fuel.
1 vac listen for hiss in the few min it runs
check lines for damage, splits, unhooked etc. don't forget under car and dash
2 check fuel pressure, check for fuel delivery to the cyl. remove spark plug crank and check small look for fuel. remove coil wire so it won't start on you.
Check battery cable on the + side. There may be 2 cables sandwiched together on the + lug. One runs the computer and the other is everything else. Mine was loose and car would die.
I would say the car is not getting any fuel. you could try replacing
the fuel filter which is cheap. It could also be the fuel pump which is
probably in the tank.(try tapping the gas tank with a hammer lightly)
If the car starts then it is probably the pump. The last thing i think
it could be is that is isn't getting any spark. Take the spark plug
wire off the plug itself and put a screwdriver in the hole and make
sure it is touching the metal part of the plug. Have someone try to
start the car and hold the screwdriver near a piece of metal, if you
see a blue spark then the car is getting spark, if you see nothing then
you probably have a bad coil.
