Power Steering Pump Still Not Working

Hello, i have replaced my pump several times now and it still continues to lock up on me and stop working from time to time. It does not matter the weather, temp or anything just decides to work when it wants to work i guess. There is a constant whining coming from i believe the belt but sounds like the pump? The fluid never drains and I seems to be clear. Can you please please please help me with this on going problem?

  • Dq727 Feb 25, 2009

Thank you all for your responses!! One of these HAS to work! I will be working on this first thing and will let you know how I do.

  • Dq727 Feb 25, 2009

Ok, I tried to turn the wheel left to right right to left a couple of times with the top off the power steering pump and it is continueing to whine and I have noticed when i turn the wheel the fan stops? Is this normal?it will eventually start right back up again but not if i keep turning the wheel. Also, I thought the pump was leaking underneath it just over the oil filter but its oil leaking not power steering fluid its black would this have anything to do with this problem or is that a whole nother issue. I am going to check the hoses maybe the sound of the pump straining is the clogged hoses?

Check with local dealer regarding updated/recalled power steering hoses, that have been causing numerous problems. Or call number for customer service in your manual, and explain.
Good Luck, let us know.

From what I've been able to find on those hoses, they do cause a restriction, that's why I advised talking to dealer before we get in too deep. good Luck, let us know.

It is possible that you may have air in the lines, to get any air out of the lines you first need to take the cap off the resvoir (pump) then start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel left and right lock to lock. Do this a few times, check the fluid level & add as needed. This should solve the problem.

Hope this helps.

My 2001 Pontiac Astez power steering is not working put new rack and pinon &power steering pump and both fluid hoses

If all is assembled correctly and the system is bled by working the steering from lock-to-lock several times with the engine running and topping up the reservoir as required, the power steering should work. A pressure test would prove whether the pump is working correctly.

On later CAN-bus controlled cars the electronics might need telling the steering has been repaired or replaced before it will work satisfactorily.

Steering noise and shutter probems on 1995 ford explorer ltd

Have you bled all air out of the system after refit?
Check the oil level and for any signs of air in the oil.

To bleed the system, you must turn the wheel from lock to lock, whilst topping up the power steering fluid. After a dozen turns or so, stop the engine, and allow the air in the fluid to rise out over several minutes.
Restart the engine, and work from lock to lock another dozen times or so, checking the oil level again.

After doing all that, is there still air in your system?
Is the power steering drive belt slack?

If everything is normal and operating properly, then you may have an issue with your steering rack.

Power steering pump

Whining may be normal.
Pulling fluid from reservoir may be normal.
But I would not expect the fluid to go back to the reservior when you stop.
Is it?
If so, you may have some trapped air or something.
Jack the wheels off the ground, and go lock to lock on the steering, several times, to bleed any air out.

How do you bleed a power steering pump on a 2005 dodge caravan

With the engine running slowly turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times. Make sure the level stays full. As the air pockets are reduced the level may go down. It may take awhile to get all the air out of the system. If the power steering works it is not a problem.

Power steering fluid is leaking from hose or reservoir 2003 accord

HELLO! Give the area around the pump a good clean-up. Start the car, and while someone turns the steering wheel from lock to lock (several times) try and determine if the connection point of pressure line to pump is leaking. Also watch behind the pulley for fluid escaping from behind the belt pulley. If it's the connection ;
Remove, clean , and tighten. If leak is behind pulley the pump seal is defective and you'll need to but a new pump. It is less expensive to buy it from an auto parts store. But here is a tip; Stop at a dealership, have the parts dept. run your VIN to identify what your pump looks like. Take that drawing to parts store to insure your getting the correct replacement. Honda uses a multitude of of different pumps.

Inatallation 92 honda accord power steering pump

Hey, here's the procedure, disable air bag, if equipped w/ one, disconnect the pump return hose from the reservoir and place the end in a large container. Plug the port in the reservoir. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times, until fluid stops running from the hose. Turn off engine immediately. Re-attach hose. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses at the pump. Remove the drive belt. Remove the mounting bolts/nuts and remove pump.
Install in reverse order. Adjust belt tension, fill ps reservoir and bleed any air from the system (to bleed air from system, fill reservoir, start engine and allow to idle, turn wheel from side to side all the way several times. Shut off, fill if necessary.
