Well lately the auto theft light keeps coming on and then tonight it just wont stay running

If the theft code keeps coming back on it is the vehicle will not start. The vehicle thinks someone is trying to steal it so it won't let it start. I would suggest you get a good mobile Auto Electrician look at it. They may be able to solve the issue and clear the code causing the problem.

check the over load circuit breaker for the lights going out. Run fault codes to find the ABS/ Traction control sensor problem

Sounds like the anti theft sensor in the ignition keyhole. Squirt a little carb cleaner, brake cleaner or electronic parts cleaner in the keyhole. I then swab the deepest part of the keyhole with rolled up paper, very thinly like 1/4 inch tube crushed flat. The tip of the paper will have dirt on it. Repeat until no more dirt.

The anti-theft system will keep the car from being driven, so I would start there. You may need to reset the anti-theft or check the ignition key for problems.

Just keep in mind that the 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee was called "ZJ Series", so they have the same device and systems; in your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Anti-Theft System is equipped with Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS).

VTSS system monitors vehicle doors, hood, liftgate and ignition. If an attempt is made to enter or operate vehicle without proper disarming of system, vehicle horn will sound, headlights, taillights and parking lights will flash, and engine will be prevented from running.

your key has a chip in it and Ur car isn't reading it right u need a pro to help u in person sorry

Make sure you are turning the ignition to the on position. Most cars will flash the security light until it is reset. Then the car should start.

replace the auto controller for your head lights the module is bad.! go to a local salvage or parts store there about $20

My 2000 cavalier has done this for 6 months. You take your key out then open your door, wait ten minutes and the system resets itself and the car will start-annoying you bet!!!
