If you think that's a lot for a lens, you have either been extraordinarily lucky, or else have been buying 'coke bottles'. Not used one myself, but I've heard nothing bad about it.

Sounds to me as if some of the electronic connections are not completing the circuit properly - have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the camera and the lens carefully with a lint-free cloth and some IPA ?

NEVER open it up. You will destroy the dust seals. Have Canon repair it.

The lens is for Minolta/Sony A mount and you are trying to use it on a canon body which has the contacts and mounting points in a different position so it isn't going to work as well as a lens with the correct mount for the body you are using if at all you will need to get the lens mount changed or an adapter built to allow the lens contacts to mate up in the correct order will be cheaper to buy a camera body to fit the lens or a lens that fits the canon mount lens

Time for a CLA. The focus mechanism will is usually filled with grease, makes it smooth turning, if that grease separates it can make things difficult. Hello, While turning the lens look at the lens mount. Does the lens turn but the mount stay stationary? If so maybe there is a connection issue. With the release button pressed then rapidly turning the lens back and forth, maybe it will release. Maybe something simple, or the lens connector to the lens mount or lens mount itself is the issue.

That lens takes a 77mm filter - if you examine the end of the lens very closely, you'll see some threads just on the inside lip of the very edge - the filter screws on to the end via those threads.

Hi Nicolas. Normally, this problem comes from a loose screw and roller that makes the mechanism gets stucked.

Almost all early Quantaray lenses (and Sigma lenses, Sigma made Quantaray) in the Canon EOS mount will show error messages on Canon digital cameras (but still work fine on older EOS film cameras). usually err99 but err01 also. There is no DIY fix and Sigma ran out of update parts years ago. Current production lenses and Canon made lenses will not have this problem. This lens would only work for someone shooting EOS film cameras with no intention of "upgrading" their system to digital Canon cameras in the future.
