What is your Wireless card?
have you tried the XP driver? (sometimes works)
If you look closely at the chips on the PCI card you might be able to identify the "real" manufacturer, then try their web site.

or Free sign up to drivers-guide

or put the card into the PC and run a full windows update, make sure you change the "update" setting to look for more than just "windows" updates.
and lastly, leave it in the XP system and get a new "Vista" compatable card, either PCI or USB

Find the make and model then go to that website and get updated driver for vista

  • Anonymous Aug 29, 2008

That might be a problem because vista has so much bugs, you might need to get one that operates in the vista environment

Does the dell studio 540 pc come with a built in wireless card

The wireless card was optional for that particular computer. You can see if you have one by clicking the start button (lower left corner) right click on computer and select "manage". When the window opens click device manager in the left window and find "network adapters" in the larger center window. If you see a wireless card listed in that then you have one and it should be activated already (there's no on/off switch for wireless on a desktop). If you don't, any PCI wireless card can be purchased for 15-30 bucks. To install it, turn off and unplug your computer, take off the side panel of your machine, remove the i/o cover adjacent to the PCI slot you plan to use and insert the card into the pci slot and secure it with the screw that held the cover on. Power on your computer and run the driver installation software that came with the card you purchased.

My gt4024s sound card crapped out and I'm trying to figure out what sound card I can upgrade to. I'm just looking for something cheap to get me by and need to know what cards to look at. I know...

well no OS told
so there is no answer ever lacking such a key fact.
if the PC runs old OS new sound cards do not work now.
like XP sound cards are useless on new PC
and new sound cards are useless on XP.
see? there is no support for XP or vista now
and w7 is nearing same.
yes you can buy XP sound cards on ebay if they promise it works on XP that is, there are old stock still sold.
the 4020 not sold in USA only 4022
so I will read this manual
OMG BTX PC here, the horror of backwards MOBO
and cards that do not fit this case + mobo and hit the fan shrouds
seem top come with VISTA OS , GW shows.
but our manual shows no BTX horror,>? how odd is that.?
this PC needs no audio card at all to do sound.
it has the 6 sounds jacks on the rear.
sound cards added only add new feature or better sound.
ok the 4020R is reversed BTX, they had ATX and BTX(R) then.
  • One PCI Express Ă—16 (graphics interface)
  • One PCI Express Ă—1
  • Two PCI conventional

  • there are your slots
  • only you know what slots are free to use, looking or what slot was used on old card, really not needed anycard
  • so the answer is this, use X1 slot sound for VISTA.
  • or buy USB sound dongle device, for VISTA
  • if not VISTA say what it is..
  • BTW BELOW IS THE BTX VERSION THAT CAN BE A HORROR.
  • LET ME EXPLAIN HORROR NEXT
  • LETS SAY X16 SLOT HAS VIDEO GPUCARD.
  • AND NOT A NEW SOUND CARD IS PUT AT X1 SLOT
  • AND HITS THE GPU CARD X16 , SEEN THIS VAST TIMES.

Reformatted Windows XP does not recognize D-Link wireless adapter

I ran recently across the same problem and solved it by changing the PCI slot where the card was installed... it makes little sense to humans, but apparently make a world of difference to the PC hardware ;)
Assuming you had installed unsuccessfully both Card and Driver you have them (like I did) both on your PC. In such ase, the solution for me was as follows: 1) Turn Off PC 2) Remove the card from the current PCI slot 3) Turn PC back On and remove driver 4) Turn Off PC, remove power cord and wait a minute or two 5) Do not install card yet 6) Turn PC back On and install the driver 7) Turn Off PC remove power cord 8) Install the Wireless card in a different PCI slot THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! Can't be the same slot as where it was installed before!!! Note: If you have none available swap PCI slots or remove a PCI card to free up a different slot for the wireless card... remove a card you need the least and in its place install the Dlink Card. You may want to hold off on installing in a second step the card you have just removed, to be on the "safest" side.
    9) Once the card is installed, Power up your PC 10) Once windows will be back up and running the hardware wizard should kick in and tell you that new hardware was found. 11) Follow the on-screen instructions 12) click "Continue Anyway" when XP will warn you that the driver hasn't been signed 13) Installation should be completed after you click Finish at the end of the New Hardware Wizard process 14) Simply go to your wireless networks and make sure all works in order
(I know that this process may sound a bit "anal" in some steps, but I was no longer willing to deal with any possibility of problems of any kind as I was ready to rip that wireless card to shreds!)
I hope this will help those who struggled with reviving an old PC to give to a friend!

    Sound driver is not installing.

If its Vista then forget about using your existing sound system. If its not a laptop then you can add a sound card in any PCI slot and the driver & if u are using Vista make sure your new card is Vista compatible. If OS is winXP then you may be able to download the appropriate driver which support HD (high density) sound cards....sodeep

My wireless network adapter's device driver doesn't work

Download the latest drivers for XP or Vista

Note: If you can't find Vista drivers for Vista use XP drivers.

Uninstall the driver from XP or Vista.
If you have PCMICA adapter card in laptop remove it.
    Reboot the PC

Note: If the network adapter is built-in laptop or PCI (desktop) leave it along.

Re-install the drivers and wait for the driver to tell you when to install the device if you have this option and don't have PCMICA card adapter for wireless.

If the card still doesn't work it could be faulty or OS is corrupted and needs to be re-installed. (this would be the last step to fix the problem)

Bought the wrong part, trying to figure out if I can use it anyway

that is a PCI (none express card) and only works in desktops modern with spare unused PCI slots not express)
no PC told at all , 40 years of PC 100,000 models that will fail new.
new PC have no PCI slot at all that ended in 2010
all modern PC the chip set there intel or AMd ended PCI support long ago. industrial uses like CNC mills and what now , they buy pci-express to PCI adapters and but not the card too tall and will not fit the PC case (hits)
send it back ! yes and stop buying legacy junk unless PC is.
get a real wifi card called PCIexpress ! only with antennas yes. good that.
no OS told at all , cards can be bought old that do not support w10 at all, so not telling your OS , answers are impossible;.
to buy a card his my list.
    1. must support your secret OS. MUST ! and is why FiRST.
    2. card must fit PCI-excress slot that is empty, longer slots than card are A-OKAY. (nasa slang sorry)
    3. get 802.11AC or AX called now wifi 5 or 6 (is dual band max)
    4. get one with antennas x2, so have longer range.
    5. antenna;'s in metal cased PC is useless (faradays laws)_
    6. do not buy router card, that is just silly and asking for trouble.
    7. upgrade real router at home to at lease AC grade 11AC .
    8. the PCI-e slot is power, there. 750 times as much power as needed for any wifi card on earth, 100MW it.
    9. that is it. if the maker has driver for your unstated OS load it first. (via Ethernet) or other PC. copy A to B.

Wireless card not functioning/disabled after loading XP in a Compaq Presario C700T CTO Notebook PC

The wireless is not going to turn on and off via the switch properly until we get the drivers loaded to make it work. There are 3 possible types of wireless card it could be, so we have to find out the exact model number of your system. On the bottom there should be a label that has a P/N or part number listed. what are those numbers. Here's an example of the label:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00033108&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3632144&dlc=en

    or

    http://tinyurl.com/35dt4h

we need the info listed for #1, #2 and #3. Then we should be able to determine which adapter you have, and then we can (hopefully) find some Windows XP drivers for you.
