Scanners usually require a driver and a version of twain that are both compatible with the machine and with the OS you are using.
You don't mention the OS you are using but if you go here: Memorex mem48u flatbed scanner drivers xp 7
there seem to a number of different drivers etc (which should include twain) for your machine and various OSs. One of these should work fine for you, although I do see a potential problem if you are running Win8 as I didn't see a driver for it.

Well it should be detevted without the need of any drivers in Windows Xp, if you
are using other OS, try installing the support cd that came with your Memorex scanner (it is the mini cd(always) in the package).

get the winXP driver MEMu1.50 (still available), there are no Vista drivers. Run the installation using WinXP emulation in Vista. You must run the installation as if you are in XP, not necessary when using the scanner subsequently. Now the Memorex 48u works on a Dell Dimension, running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope this helps. I got the scannner for $14 after rebates at Staples years ago, it won't die.
