It should be in playback mode. It doesn't matter if you plug in camera first or computer first but it does matter that you have to first install the proper drivers for your camera on your computer. The proper drivers is on the CD that came with your camera. Install that first before connecting your camera to your computer. Personally, I don't like to connect camera to computer unless I'm doing an update to the firmware. I would suggest buying a USB memory card reader if your computer/laptop doesn't have one already. Then I upload my pictures by removing the memory card from the camera and plug into the USB card reader. Best of luck.

Can I have troubleshooting help for uploading my pictures using a USB?

The basic steps to uploading pictures from your camera using a USB connection are as follows:

Connect your camera to the computer using the USB cable provided.
Turn on the camera
Go to my computer
Your camera should be listed there.
Double click on it to open up your picture folders.
Select the pictures you want to transfer.
Drag them to the folder on your computer where you want to save the pictures. (The easiest way to do this is to open that folder in a separate window and then just drag the photos there.

If you need additional assistance, let me know.

Whenever I plug the USB cable into my camera, the screen goes black. It does it even when the cable isn't plugged into the computer. Even though the screen is black the camera still functions normally but...

As far as I know, most cameras are made so that once it senses a USB cable (whether as being inserted physically or as a source of current), it reduces the camera to pretty much no more than a memory card reader.  It is my belief this is so you can't use your camera directly with your computer, either as a web cam or using your computer as an immediate storage device.

Uploading pics

- Connect the smaller end of the USB
cable into the USB port of your DXG.
- Connect the other end of the USB cable to your computer's USB port.
- The Digital video camera’s LCD Panel will turn on and will display
the PC Connection Menu
- Press the select button up or down button to select Mass Storage
Device option on the menu screen.

Goto my computer, you can see new 1 drive appear (or 2 if you have SD card in your DXG). So now you can copy/upload your pictures to your computer hard disk.

Problem Uploading pictures

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Here's how...
  • Starting PC mode
If you connect the USB cable to a USB port on your PC and then turn on the power, the camera will automatically switch to "computer connection mode".
In this mode, you can download stored images to your PC through the USB cable.
The LCD monitor on the camera is always turned off in PC mode.
  • Connecting the camera to a PC
1. In any mode, except Voice Recording mode, press the Menu button.
2. Press the LEFT/ RIGHT button and select the 'SETUP' menu tab.
3. Select the 'USB' menu by pressing the UP/DOWN button and press the RIGHT button.
4. Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select 'Computer', and then press the OK button.
5. Press the menu button twice and the menu will disappear.
6. Connect the PC to the camera with the USB cable.
  • Downloading stored images
You can download the still images stored on the camera to your PC's hard disk and print them or use a photo editing software to edit them.
1. Connect the camera to your PC with the USB cable.
2. On your computer's desktop display, select 'My Computer' and double click 'Removable Disk' - 'DCIM' - '100SSCAM'.
3. Select an image and press the right mouse button.
4. A pop-up menu will open.
Click the 'Cut' or 'Copy' menu.
- 'Cut' : cuts (i.e. moves) a selected file.
- 'Copy' : copies files.
5. Click a folder where you want to store the file on your PC.

Don't forget to rate this solution once you've tried it !

Good Luck.
