My computer was stolen. It ran Windows XP. I purchased a new computer that runs Windows 7. I backed up my XP data using Retrospect 6.5. The software is not compatible with Windows 7, but I installed it anyway just to do the restore. When I try to restore, it says I need administrator privileges, and it won't retrieve any of the backed-up files. Is there any way I can retrieve my backed-up data?

Can you borrow a computer that is running Windows XP, and restore your files to it?

Then, you can use a router to "network" that computer with your computer, and copy the files across the network, from that computer to your computer.

HP COMPAQ 6510b RUNS SOOO SLOW

My recommendation: Install XP.
Well, not that there actually something wrong, but it initially came with XP or Vista. It depends. HP puts it a XP. Check your MS Product key sticker.

It is a simply determination that the laptop just does not have a enough resources to run Win 7 effectively. How do I know, I am using an HP 2.3GHz with XP. I tried Win 7 awhile back and immediately removed it. If fact, I do clean install of XP at least once a year. I do test more software than most.

Here is my Slow Windows Machine! default fix.
  • Sounds like not enough resources such as RAM and CPU. Check Performance in Task-Manager (CTRL-ALT-DELETE).
  • Try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig. Startup tab and uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when you initiate.

Oh yea, in your case disable AREO, and u
se a virus protection with a smaller footprint. Like MS Security Essentials. My PC just couldn't handle McAfee or the likes.

Software will not load on windows 7

Your best option is to start with the software supplier.

I have used some of the older versions of this software and I was not all that impressed as i too had some issues but more to do with printing and the C&P functions.

You dont say which version of windows 7 home basic, home, pro etc.
BUT windows 7 does have a compatibility mode that does allow you to run a program as if it was running under XP, Vista etc. you may want to explore that option

Go to the windows HELP option and type in "program compatability"
From there you should be able to get along and see if the program needs anything else or will run under a particular mode.
Note that you may have to try more than one mode until you find one that works.

My old computer with a Borland dBase 5.0 program on it crashed but the hard drive was salvaged and I have hooked it up to my new computer. However, my old computer ran Windows XP on 32 bit, the new one...

Do I need Windows XP Mode?
Windows 7 has several built-in tools to help with program compatibility and Windows XP programs should be installed directly on Windows 7. Windows XP Mode runs many older Windows XP productivity programs and that are not natively compatible with Windows 7, thus helping realize cost savings and reduce possible operational downtime by extending the life of existing software. Visit the Windows 7 Compatibility Center to find software that works with Windows 7.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

It's the best of both worlds: The new Windows XP Mode lets you run older Windows XP business software right on your Windows 7 desktop.

Designed primarily with small- and medium-sized businesses in mind, Windows XP Mode comes as a separate download and works only with Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise. Windows XP Mode also requires virtualization software such as Windows Virtual PC. Both are available free on the Microsoft website.

My windows xp professional did not pass windows validation

From where did you get your computer?
It's a serious breach-of-contract if a computer-store "pre-installed" Windows (XP or Vista or 7) on your computer, and they used a "stolen" product-key.

If a "friend" of yours installed Windows XP Professional, using a "stolen" product-key, they have not done you a favour.

Have your credit-card ready, and follow the on-screen instructions to make an online purchase (from Microsoft) of a valid product-key, in order to "get genuine" and to "pass" the "validation" check.
