own a hp notebook and have no backlight. the strange part is that I plug an external monitor and the screen works for a couple of seconds and then loses its signal! the rest of the computer appears fine and the screen on the laptop is visible that it still works even if really dark. having gone through a few forums it seems that the inverter or the backlight is potentially the culprit! will take it back under warranty and I will let everyone know what the outcome is!

This question is to the guest that posted a solution to a big problem with a very simple fix(Fn & F4)!

i have already sent the computer for warranty repair. But somehow i would feel really stupid if it was something that easy! Could you please elaborate what the Fn & F4 do to the computer that makes the screen work for future reference! Some of these simple fixes could help a lot of people out there and also save themselves expensive fixes.

    thank you for the help.

Why is there no display?

hi

can you plug in another monitor to the video plug on the side of your laptop?

if the monitor works but your laptop screen stays dark your laptop screen needs to be replaced .

If the monitor is also dark then the LCD screen is ok but the inverter needs to be replaced

We own 2 Sony TVs. FD Trinitron Wega KV-27FV310 and LCD Bravia KDL 40S4100. Both have now lost 1/2 a screen. Top 1/2 on the Wega and left 1/2 on the Bravia. Our son plays XBox 360 on them. What i

On the WEGA the panel control module and possibly the left side planer board is done for. On the other sounds like the planer board on the dark side is done a well.
Get your son a Gaming type monitor cause this will continue to happen due to the higher refresh rates demanded on the gaming software.

Dark screen on toshiba laptop qosmio g55-q804

Assuming you have tried to change the brightness controls, this is usually caused by a failing backlight in the monitor screen. These can be changed, but are very difficult to do without breaking the fine tube arrangement. Replacing the screen is a better solution and not difficult to do, even for a novice.

Have a hp dv7-1240us laptop. the screen will not

this sounds like the inverter in the screen. I would start by subbing the lcd screen. Then try and external monitor. video problems are difficult. don't get frustrated

HP dv9000 getting power but dark monitor

It is probably that the inverter or the backlights have packed up

Turn the machine so that a strong light shines on the screen from the side you may then see the windows splash screen in the background.

Other check is to plug another monitor into the port on the laptop if that works then it is down to the inverter

My hitachi 15.4 inch laptop monitor is not working, i can read and see everything but its very dark so what is the problem and how can i read it clearly?

Hi:
You should first try to increase the screen brightness by holding down your function key and hitting the screen brightness key. If you have tried that, borrow a computer monitor, and connect it up to the VGA output connector on your laptop. If you toggle to an external monitor, by holding the function key, then the monitor key, you should be able to tell if the video is bright on the external monitor. If it is ok, then your laptop has either a bad LCD inverter, or backlight bulb.
