Hi I recently bought the Garmin 1490T GPS and have never used a GPS before. I was able to start up the GPS and connect the charger in the car and enter the home address. However I am a bit lost on how to start using the GPS in entering and getting directions to locations. Could you please advise where so I enter the destination address and would like the GPS to navigate me to the destination as I drive there. Thanks & regards Sean

Have you tried holding the power button for more than 20 secs - or after draining the battery and restarting on charger holding the lower right screen corner for at least 20 seconds?

The best way to charge your garmin satnav is by plugging it into the car charger for 4 hours. It can also be charged with the optional mains charger which also takes 4 hours.
You can also charge your satnav by connecting it to a computer with the mini usb lead for 8 hours. The satnav and computer need to be turned on.

I have the same GPS and the lane assist only works in areas that are available. For example on the NY thruway only the most popular exits show the lane assist. I was a little disappointed when I found this out, but hopefully that will add them on future map updates. Also make sure you register your unit and do all the software and map updates; maybe it may show more lane assist roads. Hope this was some help,Thanks for using FixYa

After three months, I'm sure the internal battery needs to be charged. But even so, it should work when plugged into the car charger. The first thing you should do is check that the charger cord is connected properly at both ends. Mine has a green LED on the plug. If yours does, make sure that light goes on. Try jiggling the connectors at each end of the power cord. If it still doesn't work, the next thing to try is replacing the power cord. (Maybe you can borrow a power cord from a friend). If the power cord isn't the problem, I'm afraid the problem is in the Garmin itself. Good luck.

you will need to contact where you bought it from and inform them that it says it was already registered. If you contact garmin they will just refer you back to the shop you bought it from
This is the only way you will be able to receive the map updates

If you want to test the maps on your new Garmin you can do one of two things. Either you can copy the maps onto an SD card and then insert the card into your GPS. You can also connect the GPS to your computer with the USB cable that was supplied with you unit. Using whatever file manager you normally use with your version of Windows (Windows Explorer, Total Commander, etc), you will be able to see your Garmin GPS as another drive on your system. You can then copy your City Select maps over to your Garmin.

Once you have the maps either directly on your Garmin GPS or on a microSD card, you have to choose to use those maps. From the main screen of your GPS choose Tools>Settings>Map. If your City Select maps are compatible with your GPS they will show up in the list of maps. To make use of the map just choose it by touching the name of the map. Your Garmin will then load that map and display it. If your City Select maps do not show up in the list, or if you choose them and they do not load or give you an error then they are not compatible with your 1490T.

Yes if you connect it to the USB port on your computer it will charge. It takes 8 hours approximately compared to 4 on a car charger or mains.

There is a possibility that the antenna is defective. Sometimes a factory reboot helps or re-burn of the firmware.

The cigarette lighter adapter has a fuse in it, Carefully unscrew the Silver tip of plug, Carefully its spring loaded... and check the fuse..

Did you buy your unit with a credit card? If so you could possibly get a receipt,

Did you Register your unit with Garmin? If so they would have some kind of record when you brought it.
