Microwave was running, cooking potatoes, and hum of microwave became louder and mocrowave just went dead. No display or anything. unplugging for 30 sec. as recommended by GE did nothing. Magnetron? Fuse? Would like to be able to repair this myself.

When cooking a potato in the microwave Without puncturing it with a fork... it definitively EXPLODS braking the CAROUSSEL PLATEAU and probably damaging some delicate electronics inside, (you have to pearce the potato with a fork to let steem out when cooking) if you are lucky it could be just a blown fuse inside, have it checked by a proffessional (there is normally no reset for a microwave oven exception maiby for the control panel)
Replace the magnetron by the sounds of it. The hum gets louder a second or so into "Cooking", that would comply with the magnetron heaters coming on and working into a dead magnetron. It could be capacitor or diode of course.
one of three things shorted could cause this: H.V. diode, capacitor,or the magnetron tube, take screw driver and short terminals on capacitor before touching anything inside the case, then chk resistance on capacitor should show infinite after needle settles, diode should show hi resistance one way and a lower resistance in the other direction(use the RX100 scale not the RX1) on both parts diode should not show very low resistance or it could be leaking, mag is a different story,it can be chk'd but in a different way
IF IT TURNS ON AND SOUNDS LIKE ITS COOKING IT IS PROBABLY THE HEART OF THE MICROWAVE THE RADIATION PART WENT OUT IT IS MORE RECOMENDABLE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE MOCROWAVE
