Hi. i am trying to assemble an HP xw4300 workstation. i recently bought from ebay a refurbished motherboard. everything works and the unit started up fine. but at 30% of copying files windows xp sp2, the computer hangs. I switched off the unit manually from the power switch. the unit did not boot upon restarts. instead i hear and see 5 short beeps and red flash simultaneously. what did go wrong? is the unit salvageable? during the beeps and flash, the system fan, cpu fan, and psu fan are spinning. i removed rams, video card, hdd but still the beeps and flash persist. please help

Was the hard drive were using new, or used? It sounds to me like it had a virus on it. I've seen that scenario before! Some malware (in particular, TDL4 and variations of it), create hidden partitions that most antivirus products never find! But all the drive has to do to get reinfected is to pass over that area on the hard disk. But if your hard disk was brand new, then I am very likely "barking up the wrong tree," if you know what I mean!

SOURCE: Motherboard ABIT KN8

I just lost my fourth KN8 motherboard and it always seems to take out the power supply unfortuneately. One I returned for the 3 year warranty and as a replacement it worked less than a month. These were on 3 different machines(cases and power supplies of various suppliers) so the mother board is the fault.

Will be hesitant to use ASUS boards again even though this may be isolated to this board only.

SOURCE: New computer won't POST

have you tried different memory as no matter what the board says they don't like some memory .
also take the board out of the case and connect pwr supply.
cpu and fan ,video card , and 1 memory stick

no cables ,keyboard ,mouse or drives connected.
this is called bread boarding.
reset the bios jumper, then put jumper back.
and power up.

SOURCE: nFORCE3-A CPU fan & LED come on, nothing else, no beep or video

If the RAM is incompatible with your board then yes it would not allow a boot. Make sure your front panel power wire is plugged into the proper spot on the motherboard and retry. If it's the RAM then you will still have the problem. If it was the wire loose or in wrong spot then it should work. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

SOURCE: Packard Bell IMedia 5055: GA-8SIML will not post

Put just the ram back into the motherboard, the pc will not boot without processor, ram and graphics pluged into the board, check this, if it will still not boot and you still get 3 beeps its a memory(ram) problem, and you will need to replace the memory stick.

The answer is Yes.

Connect just the EIDE harddrive from the Compaq.
Make sure the correct jumper pins on the back of the harddrive, have a jumper cap on them to set them to Single;

OR,

The IDE harddrive model you have may Not use a jumper cap on any jumper pins, for some models of harddrives, to set the harddrive as Single.

Look up the harddrive jumper settings on the internet.
Start with the model number on the label of the harddrive.

Example; WD2500JB
Western Digital 250GB harddrive that is IDE. (EIDE)

You will need a SATA optical drive now.
BIOS Setup > Boot Options > Set the first boot device to CDROM.
Install Windows disk.

Use IDE harddrive, and IDE optical drive on the same flat ribbon IDE cable?
Can be done, but usually is a HEADACHE, and MAY not work.
BIOS looks to see what drives are connected. It looks for the drive with the Operating System on it. (Windows)

Now put a disk in the optical drive. Time has to be divided between the harddrive, and the optical drive.
IF it does work; when you are using the computer, and the optical drive you will know the real meaning of Slow.

Have a SATA optical drive?

I have a seagate barrracuda hard drive model ST3160023A which came out of a working bootable Compaq Presario 6000. I would like to use this hard drive in a newer workstation HP xw4300. I being told this...

i have not heard of anything like that. the only thing that would make a difference is the connection. yours is sata i believe. here is a link that tells everything about that drive.

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Ultra_ATA_160_GB&vgnextoid=cd5cb1774aafd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD#tTabContentSupport

i do believe you would have to wipe the drive and format it and treat it like a brand new drive when you install it.
