Was the hard drive were using new, or used? It sounds to me like it had a virus on it. I've seen that scenario before! Some malware (in particular, TDL4 and variations of it), create hidden partitions that most antivirus products never find! But all the drive has to do to get reinfected is to pass over that area on the hard disk. But if your hard disk was brand new, then I am very likely "barking up the wrong tree," if you know what I mean!
SOURCE: Motherboard ABIT KN8
I just lost my fourth KN8 motherboard and it always seems to take out the power supply unfortuneately. One I returned for the 3 year warranty and as a replacement it worked less than a month. These were on 3 different machines(cases and power supplies of various suppliers) so the mother board is the fault.
Will be hesitant to use ASUS boards again even though this may be isolated to this board only.

have you tried different memory as no matter what the board says they don't like some memory .
also take the board out of the case and connect pwr supply.
cpu and fan ,video card , and 1 memory stick
no cables ,keyboard ,mouse or drives connected.
this is called bread boarding.
reset the bios jumper, then put jumper back.
and power up.

Try the old ram back in if it works you have the wrong ram
ram comes in many shapes and flavours
ddr ddr2 etc
SOURCE: nFORCE3-A CPU fan & LED come on, nothing else, no beep or video
If the RAM is incompatible with your board then yes it would not allow a boot. Make sure your front panel power wire is plugged into the proper spot on the motherboard and retry. If it's the RAM then you will still have the problem. If it was the wire loose or in wrong spot then it should work. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

Put just the ram back into the motherboard, the pc will not boot without processor, ram and graphics pluged into the board, check this, if it will still not boot and you still get 3 beeps its a memory(ram) problem, and you will need to replace the memory stick.
