Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

I have a Nikon Coolpix L19, and I was wondering whether it can be used as a webcam. If yes, how?

No. The L19 is designed to store images and videos to memory, not to stream live video to another device.

I have a nikon coolpix l19 and when i open it it rides (memory card is write protected)

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

I have a Nikon L19 Coolpix camera which I bought at Carrefour in Cartaya, Spain. When I came to download my photo's from the camera to the computer I found the cable supplied in the box with the camera,...

The USB cables supplied with digital cameras are almost all miniUSB to standard USB. The small connector on the cable fits into the camera, but it must be oriented a certain way. If you flip the small end the wrong direction, it won't fit. And sometimes the connection is tight. You can see on the small USB plug that it isn't perfectly symmetrical.
