When a cd is placed in drive it spins and green operating light flashes very fast, after maybe a minute or two the light goes out but nothing is read.
The drive is recognised on Device Manager. This happens with all cd's placed in the drive whether they be data, music etc.
The CD Drive has probably gone bad. You will have to buy a replacement drive. I recommend newegg.com. The price will be about 30$ for a DVD burner. If you want just a DVD player or CD Burner then it will be even cheaper. Dell provides a very easy to read step by step guide with pictures on replacing your drive here:

Good Luck!
Hope this helped!

Every time I go to put in a DVD into the CD/DVD Drive green light goes on and that's about it. It's a CD/DVD so it should read my DVD's not just CD's. How do I fix this?
Same problem; since this happened my comp. makes a constant "whirring" noise, like the fan is on overdrive or something.
This only happens with DVDs for me. The drive went bad about six months after we purchased the computer and dell sent a replacement and it was professionally installed. the drive has stopped working again and this leads me to believe it is a problem with the production of this drive. i am able to get some use out of the drive by unistalling and reinstalling it. it only works for a little but it is better than nothing.
placing disk in cd drive nothing happens
Nothing happens when a disk is inserted into the disk drive
