the camera took a while to detect the charger but once fully charged would not turn on.
yesterday it wouldn't turn off and the display wouldn't work.

My daughter's L83T has developed the same problem. When we try to turn it on it gives 3 dull beeps and wont power on. It was purchased in December 2007 so it's not as if the rechargeable battery's reached its life expentancy.My daughter's L83T has developed the same problem. My camera is fully charged, but when I try and turn it on nothing happens, and I get three beeps coming from the camera and iut does not turn on. Highly frustrating, as I do not know what I have done, I have removed the battery etc. to see if there is a problem there, but nothing.. i'm assuming that this camera uses a SD memory card. You have most likely bought yourself an SDHC card. The cards will look exactly the same, except for their name. SD cards only go up to 2GB, while SDHC's go much higher....sometimes the SDHC card will cause camera's to do this because it is not supported.
the other possibility is that you have a defective battery and it doesn't hold a charge. You could test this with a digital multi meter.
suspect that the battery may have been incorrectly charged and may be damaged. suspect charger is not charging the battery properly. try any reset that that camera may have.
