1. Install iTunes
Before you connect your iPod to your Mac or PC computer or use it, you must install the latest iTunes software.
2. Connect and Set Up your iPod nano Charge your battery by connecting it to an Apple iPod Power Adapter or connect your iPod to a high-power USB port —one that's located directly on your computer—to ensure that your computer charges your iPod battery. (If your computer doesn't seem to recognize your connected iPod , wait about 30 minutes to allow the iPod battery to charge before going further.)
3. Fill your iPod nano and iTunes with Music Once you finish the set up, iTunes will open. It will then either:

  • Automatically start filling your iPod with music from your iTunes library (if you set iTunes to automatically update your iPod)
OR
  • Allow you to pick and choose what music, audiobooks, and podcasts to add, if you opted to manually manage music on your iPod.
To manually add content, simply drag any file from your iTunes library or playlist to your iPod icon in the iTunes Source list. If you're using iTunes for the very first time, you'll need to add some music to iTunes first, such as songs from your own CDs or music already on your hard drive.
4. Disconnect your iPod nano Once you've got your music, audiobooks, and other files on your iPod, you're ready to enjoy it.
  • If you see an "OK to Disconnect" message on your iPod, simply disconnect it from your computer.
  • If you see a "Do Not Disconnect" message, click the eject icon that appears next to your iPod icon in the iTunes Source list and then disconnect your iPod from your computer when you see the "OK to Disconnect" message.
5. Play your iPod nano Now you're ready to enjoy your iPod.
6. Learn more Whether you're a Mac or Windows user, the information below will help you enjoy your iPod to its fullest.

You may not need to take your iPod Nano in to be repaired if the player doesn't turn on as normal. There are a variety of different fixes that you can attempt as a way to get the Nano to turn on.

Flip the iPod Nano's "Hold" switch to "OFF." The iPod Nano cannot be turn on if the switch is set to "ON." Reset the iPod Nano. Move the "Hold" switch to "ON" and then "OFF." Charge the Nano for at least 30 minutes. Then, try to turn the Nano on. Update the iPod Nano's software. Connect the Nano to your computer via the player's USB cable. Is there a way to override or reset the password on the iPod Nano

Unfortunately, if the password has been forgotten, you will have to "Restore" the iPod, which will erase all the songs and other files that are currently on there.

To update or restore iPod nano:
1 Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of
iTunes from www.apple.com/ipod/start.
2 Connect iPod nano to your computer.
3 In iTunes, select iPod nano in the Source pane and click the Summary tab.
The Version section tells you whether iPod nano is up to date or needs a newer version
of the software.
4 Click Update to install the latest version of the software.
5 If necessary, click Restore to restore iPod nano to its original settings (this erases all data
from iPod nano). Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.

Apple iPod is Locked

There is only one way - and it will erase all your songs (applies to most models, not just Nano):

If you lock your iPod nano screen and can’t unlock it
Normally, if you can connect your iPod nano to the computer it is authorized to work with, your iPod nano automatically unlocks. If the computer authorized to work with your iPod nano is unavailable, you can connect iPod nano to another computer and use iPod Updater to restore your iPod software. See the next section for more information.
If you want to change the screen lock combination and you can’t remember the current combination, you must restore the iPod software, and then set a new combination.
Updating and Restoring iPod Software
You can use iPod Updater to update or restore your iPod software. Apple periodically
updates iPod software to improve performance or add features. It is recommended that
you update your iPod nano to use the latest software. You can also restore the software,
which puts iPod nano back in its original state.
- If you choose to update, the software is updated, but your settings and songs are not
affected.
- If you choose to restore, all data is erased from your iPod nano, including songs, files,
contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod nano settings are
restored to their original state.
To update or restore iPod nano with the latest software:
1 Go to www.apple.com/support/ipod and download the latest iPod Update. The update
has the latest software for all models of iPod.
2 Double-click the software installation file and follow the onscreen instructions to install
the iPod update.
3 Connect iPod nano to your computer and open iTunes. The iPod Updater application
opens.
If you’re using a Windows PC and the iPod Updater application doesn’t open
automatically, you can find the updater by choosing Start > All Programs > iPod.
4 Follow the onscreen instructions to update or restore iPod software.
If you use the iPod Updater application and it doesn’t recognize that iPod nano is
connected to your computer, reset iPod nano (see page 45).
If you want to restore iPod software and you don’t have an Internet connection, you
can use the iPod Updater application that was installed on your computer when you
installed the software from the iPod CD.
