The RCA DETK185R TV can be controlled with Universal Remote Controls. I tested several.
The best match was a 4 digit universal remote from GE. Model Number 10841. Code 1961 worked almost everything.
With a 5 digit remote from RCA, model number RCRN04GR, Code 12372 worked Power, Channel, Volume and Input.
A 3 digit remote from GE, model RC24912-B. Code 166 was able to control Power, Channel, Volume and Input.
An old 3 digit remote from RCA, model RCU-403A. Code 062 was able to control Power, Channel and Volume.
Most remotes from GE and RCA will use the same code numbers. So even if you have a different model remote from GE or RCA, these codes may work.
These codes should work with other TV models in this series from RCA, including Detk215r, Detk186r and Detk156r.

A universal remote will allow you to access all the necessary functions, and depending on the remote that you plan on using, a lot of the time you can use the more advanced functions as well.
If you have the remote working, you can access the model number through the menu settings as well. Get to the generic menu, go to the very bottom of the list where you will see hardware settings or just settings, from there you will see an option that says either hardware information, or information or even just one that says about. If you click on that you can generally find the model number and serial number of the TV.
If you're using a generic "less expensive" universal remote the code for your TV will depend on the exact model number. And you'll have to crawl in behind the TV to get that information then, sometimes you can access the menu from the buttons along the front/side of the TV but not always (impossible to know for sure without knowing the model number of your TV). Sometimes you can fake the remote settings if you punch in the code for any Hitachi TV, guess at how old the TV is and find a number in a code that is about the same size as the TV.

That sounds like something that would be in a service manual. Now that your tv warranty is expired, you can probably buy the service manual off samsungparts.com. I wouldn't have suggested that if your tv was in warranty, because that procedure would be in the service menu, which only Samsung trained technicians have access to when the product is in warranty. Just remember, if you go in the service menu and mess things up and can't fix it, you would probably need service for the tv.
