Pioneer sd-643hd5 rear projection 64" tv has green geometry grid problems

Green grid is off in every mode, the least of which is Natural Wide. I can get the red and blue to adjust to most of the wacked green grid in that mode. But these are wavy green lines I'm adjusting to. I've ordered a couple IC's for the unit and will attempt a DIY. I'm hoping that the green grid will snap back into place with the fix. If it doesn't, what do I do next. If it requires getting a manual, where do I go?

Thanks

Yes, replacing those chips should fix those "sudden" convergence misalignment's for any color. Each chip contains 3 amps, one for each CRT Red/Green/Blue. One chip is the horizontal amp, the other is the vertical amp.

My 643HD5 was equipped with the -120 chip, but I replaced them with the newer uprated -180 part. (per Pioneers website)

When replacing yours, be sure to remove all the old heat sink compound. Then apply a thin layer of heat sink compound onto the back of the new chips. More is not better. Secure the chips onto the heat sink before soldering them in place.

I was looking at the "multiconvergence" photo on the first link above and note that the green grid looks perfect while only the red and blue look wavy. On my set the green is the wavy one. Is this an IC problem with the green or is there a seperate more likely cause? I'd hate to do all the work for nothing. Thanks.

Wow, that first link is perfection! I'm worried though. The photo on that link shows the base grid green pattern looking VERY geometrically even with only the red and blue lines off. On my set, the green base grid geometry is off/wavy. Are the IC's the correct fix?

SD-643HD5 64 in. Rear Projection TV

I had the same problem which was caused by a bad solder connection on my Green CRT driver board. The fix isn't too difficult if you've had some soldering experience.

1) Determine which CRT is going out (Reg, Green, or Blue). Looking at your convergence adjustment screen will help.
2) Unplug TV
3) Remove the front panel
4) Locate the driver board attached to bottom of the bad CRT.
5) Locate the two large heatsinks on the driver board, each has a transistor attached to it.
6) Touch-up the three solder connections on each transistor. Adding some new solder helps.

Color Problem on SD-643HD5 (Green is not working)

I had a similar problem with my Green CRT. Fixed it by carefully touching up some solder connections.

1) Locate the Green CRT Driver Board mounted on the bottom of the Green CRT.
2) Locate the two large heatsinks on the driver board. Each has a transistor attached to it.
3) Carefully touchup the solder connections on each transistor. I added some additional solder to help reflow the solder onto the pad of the circuit board. It's a bit tricky because the solder has to fill a large gap between the small leads of the transistor and large holes in the circuit board.
