I think you have a corrupt BIOS, try changing the CMOS battery first of all
if the computer is unusable (you dont get any further than this error) you may have to remove the bios chip and reprogram it with the latest bin file and an eprom programmer.
if the computer is operational, try installing the latest bios by following the instructions upon download.
One long beep signals a memory failure - the stick you just bought is faulty. BTW there is no PC266 in SDRAM the maximum is PC133. PC266 is the first standard that appeared for DDRAM. so you most likely have bought something not right from the start.
The software in the BIOS is stored on an EPROM (Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory). So, buy some hardware, namely an EPROM writer, remove the EPROM chip from the motherboard, insert the EPROM chip into the EPROM writer, download the latest BIOS-software from IBM's web-site, and load the software onto the EPROM writer, and rewrite the software onto the chip. Remove the chip from the EPROM writer, and reinsert it into the IBM motherboard.
you cant configure your bios version thats something thats programmed into the EPROM or flash memory on the motherboard you can update it using the utility and latest firmware from your motherboard manufacturers website to add functionality or features to your motherboard ie so you can use larger hard drives or that sort of thing.
Other then that the version of your bios is just to let you know what version you have so you can establish if you need to update it or if its the latest version or not.
No - this is something that can generally only be resolved with a repair install of the XP.
The repair option can be accessed while doing a standard (i.e. boot from the CD) install. Note: this is a repair option after you select to install; not the repair/recovery options on the first screen.
It should detect your OS and ask if you want to repair it. This will cause you to have to reactivate windows, and I highly recommend having your drivers already downloaded and ready to be installed. Some programs my have to be reinstalled also.
There is a sysprep tool that can be used, but I've always found it easiest to do a repair.
if the device is set up as a master and not a slave device it may be interfering with the hard drive. check the jumpers on the back of the device. If it's plugged into the same cable as the hard drive it must be a slave device. Otherwise, check your bios upon bootup to see if you it's trying to boot from the device instead of from the hard drive.
