Tappan ES 200 burner stays on high and not turning off.

Faulty switch if you are changing it yourself remember turn off power and take your time, take a photo to compare so you get it right.

The dials you mentioned are called infinite switches and if they control, or regulate should i say the amount of power applied to the burner, so those are the parts you need to replace. You can order online or go to a local appliance parts store, just make sure you take your model number with you, not the number in your owners manual but the model off the machine itself.

The switch for the right front burner is defective and needs to be replaced,its bad as far as internally when turned on no matter what its set it the interal contact is stuck on only high so their is no setting it will work on except high. By replacing the switch it will work on the various settings and not just high.

This is usually the infinite switch has failed. They are easy to check and inexpensive. There is a video at http://appliancehelponline.com/infiniteswitchvideo.html that will walk you thru testing this. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations for your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

The switch is welded closed.
It must be replaced.

sounds like a ignitor problem or a dirty burner.clean all the holes of the burner and if you could see the oraphas clean that as well.

Check your gas supply is not running too low and then check for leaks, Let me know if this helps.

I hade a code 153 also. Changed the element(costly-$200) and had to recalibrate the pan sensors(in the manual). All works fine now.

It sounds like the left front control or element has a high resistance short.

you need a new switch that is in the control panel
